Mark Kelly has given me gracious permission to use his image, so long as we include a plug for his site (www.electrobus.com). This gives us an "exclusive," as far as I'm concerned, since the new "Case for the Face" probably won't include it, let alone treat on it with the sort of seriousness it calls for. This gives Lan a free reign to address the issue if he so chooses.

Hi, Carol

I told Mac the other day that I would be glad to contribute the web page I did on the Kelly enhancement to the book, now that Mac has gotten permission from Kelly to use it.

There may still be a fly in the ointment, though, because according to Tom Van Flandern, this wasn't strictly Kelly's work; someone named Boris Starosta did the preliminary enhancement. We may need permission from Starosta as well, although I don't know how to contact him.

I found Boris Starosa re: the Mark Kelly Face enhancement. He wasn't sure if what we had was anything he did, but if so he gave us permission! Here is his response to my letter: I sent him him a copy of the enhancement:::

Subject: Re: Face on Mars Date: Sun, 3 Sep 2000 00:57:01 -0400 (EDT) From: "Boris Starosta" To: "Efrain Palermo"

Efrain:

I produced an enhanced image of the face for Tom Van Flandern's journal _Meta Research Bulletin_ . I cannot say how similar my image work was/is to Kelly's image. You may wish to contact Dr. Van Flandern to see whose image we are talking about. Is this image for which you seek permissions on the web? If not, and you want me to see it, you can send a low-res file to

ftp.starosta.com/incoming

pls send jpeg only. My internet connection is modem = slow.

If it is my image, I would be glad to give you permission, and would send you my source file. But let's see what image it is first.

Here's the response I got from Boris after I sent the Mark Kelly pic for confirmation as to authorship:

Subject: Re: Face on Mars Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 23:12:43 -0400 (EDT) From: "Boris Starosta" To: "Efrain Palermo"

Efrain:

Your file is not the same as the one I made for Tom v. Flandern. Yours is an ortho-rectified version (low viewing angle perspective removed to bring the resemblance of the MGS image even more close to that of the Viking images).

My image has had only very simple grayscale work done to it. I reversed the grayscale of the MGS image (i.e. made a negative of it), and added a few shadows. Kelly must have done something very similar, as the two images are quite alike.

If you are curious, or would like to use my image, here it is:

ftp.starosta.com/artready/MRB/

You can log on anonymously, I think.
