He converted to Islam several years ago, lives in Canada and rarely if ever performs except when he needs money to support radical Islamic fundementalists bent on the destruction of Israel.A couple of weeks ago it was in the news that he was denied the dis-boarding of a plane he was on that had landed in Israel because of his terrorist ties.Hopefully if the old Cat Stevens music is being rolled out again, the truth about who he is now will also be revealed. (btw his names is not Cat Stevens any more, its something Islamic.) Mike

Mike is right. Cat, now known as Yusuf Islam, is a lunatic. You can find out all about his latest antics at http://catstevens.com

He used to be known as Cat Stevens and now goes by the name Yusuf Islam and his recordings are being re-released to mark the 30th anniversary of his 1st American hits. He was denounced for his "reported" support of the Ayatollah Kohemi's death decree against novelist Salman Rushdie, and just this month, he was not allowed to enter Israel for his "reported" support of Hamas. NPR recently had a story on him with an interview where he tells his side of the story and about his life and faith on their weekend edition show. You can access NPR online and listen to this show or read a transcript.

The answers provided on this page are totally wacko. Cat Stevens left pop music in the early 1980's because he didn't like the glamourous lifestyle and fame. He never wanted to be a star in the first place. He realized that wanting to be famous in and of itself was insane, a characteristic of a power-greedy lunatic. He searched for answers in the scriptures of his parents' faith, Christianity. The Bible offered him nothing. It only deepened his doubts about Christianity and Judaism. He examined all the major world religions rationally and logically, when one day his brother presented him a copy of the Qur'an, the holy book of Islam. He was enthralled by it; it answered all his spiritual questions. Here was a faith that denounced the moral depravity of the Western "rock-and-roll" lifestyle that he had grown to hate. He realized it was the true religion, and he converted. Islam offered him peace, because, literally, Islam means peace, or submission. Just because he is a devout Muslim does not mean he's a terrorist or a lunatic. Obviously the two first posters are complete and utter ignoramuses for thinking so. They seem proud to admit their "sophisticated" Western biases that are filled with "sophisticated" hatred and ignorance. Who can blame them? It's all the media's fault.

Why do people think that Cat's new name is any stranger than his old? Cat Stevens is a fake name, too. His name at birth was Steven Demitri Georgieu. His adopted name today is Yusuf Islam.

Today, Yusuf Islam spends his time with his FAMILY, instead of with WHORES or drinking beer, as was formerly the case when he was a popstar. He is the principal of a Muslim school in London that he created, and he also spends time supporting humanitarian causes in Bosnia and Afghanistan (he raises money for the poor, the sick, and for orphans). Truly, he is an active leader in the British community. Unfortunately, the media somehow associates this activity with fundamentalism, insanity, asceticism, and terrorism. Beats me.
