DivX

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I've put up to 2 hours of vid on to 1 cd at VHS quality using the DivX compression codec and was wondering if anybody knows how to get it to playback using Dreamcast.

Cheers Sasha.

Currently the only way that I know of is to use the dreamcast movie maker. It uses a propreiatary compression format, and currently does not support divx. You will need to re-encode. If you have original source it might be better.

As for the possibillity that divx will ever be supported under dreamcast... probably not. Why? It's not the same chipset as the current .dll's and nobody besides m$ has the source. The only way would be to reassemble the .dll's or emulate a PC. Even with the power in the DC I doubt this would be a good solution overall.

Sorry

The reason he cant play a divx movie on the dreamcast is that divx has its own standard encoding system wich works the following way:

- The sound is encrypted (almost as if it was mp3) - as for the picture is a new sort of interlacing??? it makes your screen only draw every second line horizontaly! and saving half of the MB-Space required there too!

so if he wants to make it work on dreamcast he has to convert it back to either MPG or Original AVI!

DivX on DC is possible. It has been done but only at a rubbish 5fps.

P.S. Divx is now open source withproject Mayo so the source is OPEN!!!

Here I read: http://dciso.free.fr/divx-en.htm that it's possible, but thirst you have to compress it to another file.
