the radio

greenspun.com : LUSENET : R.E.M. : One Thread

Hey all, i got another interesting question for you all... What does everyone here think of the radio, in general? It seems to me that the state of radio lately has been pretty dismal. They basically play the same songs over and over again, & I start getting sick of bands that I might have liked otherwise. Personally, I've given up on the radio altogether; I can find music I like in other ways, just as easily, without all the clutter. But I figured that since REM is at least marginally a "pop" band, a lot of people here might have different opinions than me... so what do y'all think?? The radio: good or bad? heheheh ;) this should start a good discussion

i live in ireland and i have to admit that radio over is....diabolical! for starters, the majority of stations have too much talk on them, and when the finally DO play music, its all mainstream pop, which is fine for lil teenieboppers...but me being into all things alternative,i find it sicking to listen to....i guess that im in a minority tastewise, and that stations ARE actually aimed at lil teenieboppers...so i guess my advice to people like me would be...dont turn on the f ing radio at all.......THERE!

(i do listen to Dave Fanning on 2fm the odd time...he loves REM...

ohh...and if ur irish and u want to find a rock station, the best one is PHANTOM FM...it rocks like a stone...a rolling one.....forget it!!)

What about college radio stations, though? The dee-jays aren't all polished and obnoxious (though some are); the music is varied as well as up-and-coming (before they have been overplayed). REM got its start through college radio.

What i think of the Radio...well..i hate the radio,it is so stupid and too commercial...it always plays "the stupid songs of the moment" played by stupid girls and guys...and there are publicities every 3 minutes...and(it happens vry often)who works in the radio stops the songs meanwhile they're playing...radio is not good anymore,in fact i don't listen to it at all...radio is too silly,indeed...crappy!!! (i am talking 'bout italian radio, dunno 'bout the others) ;) P.S. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAASE.....someone house me in Dublin!!! :)

Obviously, I'm not talking about college radio--although the college radio station near me is really REALLY awful, I know that some of them can be good. But commercial radio stations just make me sick.

Understood.

yeah, I have to agree. I've given up on the radio all together. Welsh local radio is the worst thing in the world and it's not just us. On a trip to America back in February all the radio's played was bloody Moby (That bloke pisses me off. He destroys other people's songs and calls himself a musician). MTV has gone from being the cutting edge of music to being a backwater refuge for trance, dance and other pants. They give us MTV 2, but all we get on that is Alternative MUsic Television which repeats the same songs over and over. (Maybe all this just applies to MTV UK, someone else help me out here). Someone in the radio industry nedds to grab the initiative and have the balls to turn away the plastic pap. If the radio didn't expose the record companies Puppets, then people wouldn't buy it.

I think I've vented enough of my spleen for one night...

I couldn't agree more, Jon. MTV is even worse than the radio as far as the crap factor goes. They play nothing but Britney Spears & all the boy bands & fluff like that, or else rap. It's useless! And you're right, the radio just plays things that record companies consider "cool" or "popular," regardless of what people want to hear. If radio stations always had that opinion, R.E.M. might never have made it big, since they started as an indie band. There's countless bands now, though, that are as good as R.E.M. or better in terms of musical innovation, and most disc jockeys have probably never even heard of them. It's a pity.

Four words "Damn them Radio Songs!!" And Mainstream TV(MTV)is even worse.

Answer to Jon's Query- yes it is bad in America too- We have Fagstreet boys TV and NSTINK day and all that other crap.

Well, this might be way shock'n to y'all but here in South Carolina...our radio station are mega AWESOME. Like, they're mega amaz'n due to the fact that they luv to play...R.E.M.!!! Ya-hoo-iee! Like, ya can always here..."Driver 8" or "Rockville" or "Can't Get There From Here"...along w/the newer dittie's from R.E.M. Like, I feel somewhat blessed since y'all radio stations do not support R.E.M. like my stations do. Hum, gotta move ya're ka-bootie's over/down south I reckon. (a giggle) Chow M ~:)

Yeah, but E-bow and Great Beyond charted highly here with no airplay, so I suppose it shows that the radio doesn't necesserally dictate the charts....

The radio in my car is an outed extra, not at all in the home ,defunct through out! CD player and tape deck in car are grossly overworked ! All thats needed for personal choice.
