An explosion at a chemical plant in South Korea killed at least five people and injured 20 Thursday morning.

The explosion levelled the building and shattered windows on nearby buildings and cars.

The cause of the blast at a plant operated by Hosung Chemex in Yosu, about 315 kilometres south of Seoul, is under investigation.

It's not known if the plant was in operation or shut down at the time of the explosion.
