I've always been interested in words and the origins of words -- and, likewise, the origins and meanings of names. Yours is a name I've never come across before. Is there a story behind it? What does it mean? Where did it come from? Just curious.

Ben, I always liked my name but never knew anything about where it came from. I never liked *Nelda* because when Mother was angry with me she would call me that instead of Nelta. I never asked her why she chose Nelta for my name since she named the other six children simple, ordinary names.

Many years after she died I came across a Texas town with Nelta for its name. It was not too far from where Mother lived. I finally had my answer.
