VERY TIMELY. For you anyway.

Greed is the more likely answer. The US can ***AFFORD*** TO PAY and the OPEC NATIONS KNOW IT.

It could be that we're having shortages because OPEC has limited production at a time when the economy contines to grow for a record ninth straight year.

Or y2k might have something to do with it, especially with OPEC members. What I do know is, the old TB2000 forum did not create the idea that y2k could cause energy shortages. The idea was already out there.

GAO Says Nation Vulnerable To Y2K Failures In Foreign Oil, Gas

Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. General Accounting Office has told the U.S. Senate that domestic oil and gas industries report they have made "substantial progress" in preparing for the Y2K computer technology problem, but risks remain.

GAO says because half of the United States' oil is imported, the nation is vulnerable to Year 2000 failures of oil production and transportation in other countries.

GAO made its assessment of Y2K Readiness in the oil and gas industries in a May 1999 report to the Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Problem.

GAO noted that a February 1999 oil and gas industry survey found that, on average, companies noted they were 40 percent finished validating their embedded systems. However, GAO said, "over a quarter of the oil and gas industries reported that they did not expect to be Year 2000 ready until the second half of 1000 --- leaving little time for resolving unexpected problems."

According to GAO, individual domestic companies say that they are developing Year 2000 technology contingency plans, but "there are no plans to perform a national-level risk assessment and develop contingency plans to deal with potential shortages or disruptions in the nation's overall oil and gas supply.

The report is entitled, "Year 2000 Computing Crisis: Readiness of the Oil and Gas Industries".

Are you the same Kaz who played lead guitar for Urine Sample? I noticed that when you left to play electric bagpipe for Corroded Cerebreal Corn Flakes, Urine Sample went way down hill.

QUOTE: Year 2000 ready until the second half of 1000 UNQUOTE.

MOST ACCURATE like the rest of the Bull shit from "Chem Safety". WHERE were all the Chemical production Y2k problems Chem Safety predicted as noted by that Great Scientist, the Lovely Paula Gordon??

CHEM SAFETY IS ANOTHER GOV'T BOARD THAT SHOULD BE ABOLISHED AS A **WASTE OF TAXPAYER MONEY*** AND PROBABLY WILL BE AFTER G.W.BUSH IS SWORN IN.

kaz,

>OR MAYBE ITS THOSE GREEDY ARABS.

The ARABS are greedy? The ARABS?

I hope you're kidding, and I just can't tell from your short posting.

Who is it who _expects_ Arabs (and others) to cheerfully export vast amounts of a nonrenewable resource, the major source of income for many countries, at a price cheap to the consumer (and who'll sic their powerful military on anyone who threatens that cheap supply)?

We U.S. consumers, that's who. _We_'re who's greedy.
