NUFC.com report today that in 1978 we were beaten 0-3 by West Ham. This was my first match so it sticks out in my mind. If I remember correctly Brooking scored a hat trick, and we were appalling. The ball got wellied into the Leazes end and no-one would give it back.

Just as well I'm not superstitous. 3-0 tonight to the Toon.

As I will be tonight, I was in the Leazes End that day. I remember the crowd chanting "Howay the lads" for half the game. It got right on my wick, much like "Toon Toon black n' white army" ad nauseum (sp?) does now.

That fireball was two years later. 0-0 game. That 3-0 - I didn't go, but I remember the Journal headline the next day. 'Hammmered'. Thought it was funny at the time - I was only 10 or 11.
