LEEDS FANS ARRESTED AFTER HITLER CHANTS

Football Unlimited and agencies Wednesday August 23, 2000

Thirteen Leeds United fans have been arrested in Munich after chanting "Heil Hitler!" and raising their arms in Nazi salutes. The men, aged between 19 and 44, were detained on Tuesday night in Munich's Hofbraeuhaus beer garden and will be held until after tonight's Champions League third round qualifying match between Leeds and TSV 1860 Munich.

Under German law, it is illegal to make a Hitler salute, display swastikas and other Third Reich symbols, or to disseminate Nazi propaganda.

A police spokesman said the men, who were wearing Leeds replica shirts and football scarves, had otherwise not misbehaved and there had been no other incidents involving English fans.

The detained supporters would be brought before a court today, he added, but would not be freed to watch the game, which Leeds lead 2-1 after the first leg.

Where's the Turks when you need them?

Ouch!
It is morally wrong (and illegal ?) to make Nazi salutes in Germany but I wouldn't take that as and invitation for murder. The Munich airplane signals are similarly tasteless - this could be an example of double standards. I think if these fans knew the consequences they would have behaved differently, but no excuses from me I just don't think they deserve to die, if that's what you meant by the Turks rhetoric.
