IRS Grapples With E-Filing Glitches Washington (Feb. 23, 2000) -- The Internal Revenue Service has run into a problem processing electronically filed tax returns that has affected thousands of taxpayers.

The agency said that, due to a processing error, its e-file system improperly rejected 40,000 e-filed returns claiming a child care credit or reporting dependent care benefits from an employer.

The IRS is warning taxpayers whose e-filed returns were rejected because of "error reject code 090" to re-transmit the returns.

The agency also reported another glitch that affected individual taxpayer notices or letters dated Jan. 31-Feb. 21. Its power of attorney indicator was turned off during the first few weeks of filing season, routing taxpayer refunds to the wrong person.
