After the shock of our defeat on Sunday ( I was convinced we would win) had worn off I am begining to put things into perspective, and I am a little disappointed in Uncle Bobby for somehting he said after the game. "We didn't expect to come here and win, our season starts on Wednesday" What is that? admitting defeat before a ball is even kicked, not expecting to win? why shouldn't we expect to win? Did the thousands of toon fans who made the trip expect a win? I should hope so. Who in their right mind would go anywhere and expect defeat? Bobby has basically given up hope of being able to compete with NH. Is he expecting a draw when they come to SJP? Come on lads and lasses NH were better on the day, fine. I still believe in us challenging for europe and getting results at places like Leeds, Pool and Arsenal. Why not, it wasn't too long ago that our team of overachievers expected to win every single game and if we didn't it was a disaster.

I cant wait till Wednesday evening and we've beaten derby. 3 points from 2 games and we are already ahead of last year. I think we all need to sit back and watch what bobby does. This season should be a foundation layer for next year when I would expect us to be challenging for Europe and the champions league. Bobby has been in nearly a year and has managed to get rid of alot of the dross and the permantely injured, but there is still some dross to get rid of. As the season progresses expect more comings and goings and hopefully we'll finish the season strongly, maybe even at top 6 finish. After that Bobby should have the nucleus of the team he requires. A few summer signings and then as I say, challenging with the best of them!!!

Sorry Syme, but realistically, not many teams would expect to go to Old Trafford on the 'opening day' of the season and expect to come away with anything.

Before the game started I believed a draw was the very best we could hope for (predictions thread shows 2-2) and straight after the game, in defiant recognition to the fact that we had lost it, I said straight away that the season starts on Wednesday (both True, in person and Screacher, via text message, will bear witness) - six points by Saturday night and we are flying.

I really don't believe that YBR went into OT with the idea that we would lose, but asked in the heat of the tunnel straight afterwards EVERY manager would say the same.

Have faith in the man. Have faith in the Toon!

He's also trying to take the pressure of expectation off the players. Let's revel in our role as underdogs again. If things start going our way, it really engenders team spirit and accentuates the feeling of achievement. Keegan's first year in the premiership is an example. Nobody expected much of us, the pressure was off and the players performed well above expectations. Instead of getting annoyed at commentators passing us over, let's enjoy it. It's motivational. I'm sure Bradford would have been relegated had Rodney Marsh not opened his arse and opined.

Syme
I'd be interested to know what it was had you convinced we would win on Sunday. I'd have been over the moon with a draw, but as it turned out, we never even looked like scoring never mind droring. :-,

My initial disappointment has changed to mild realism. A lot of teams will go to Old Trafford this year and come away with bigger defeats than us. Even the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool will be outplayed for large parts of the game.

Give it six matches and we'll see how we're doing. If we win four out of the next six, we'll be at least 11 points better off than last season.

I'm with you De Builder, totally agree

On paper, our result is better than Liverpool's away at Arsenal. Same score line, but they had two sent off + injuries. Nobody's written 'Pool off yet.

Exactly Windy, if we beat Derby tomorrow night we'll be level with Liverpool, continue that form and we.........well we'll see at Xmas shall we! ;0)

To the best of my recolection manu have been slow at the start, they only escaped getting beaten by leicster last year and the year previous they managed a draw as well. I just thought that it was time to put the record straight, I thought that Bobby would have had our boys so fired up that a win would be a must. I am of course an optimist and realisim is now settling in nicely alongside the usual OTT expectations. manu got outplayed by chelsea last week and by all accounts were average against city on wednesday, I was sure we would win. Of course now I realize that we are saving our first win for our own fans, I mean what is the point in having the rest of the country bask in our glory?

Hate to say it but if Ipswich could match Man U toe to toe (admittedly at home) then I am really worried. I suppose my mood isn't improved by the fact that I trucked downtown on Sunday to watch the match with the rest of the Torontoon Army only to discover that the satellite company had done the dirty on us.

Still if Bradford can beat Chelsea (convincingly) then anything could happen.

So 3 (of the big 5) have already suffered defeats to 'lesser' opponents + Manure almost became croppers last night!

Tonight's game is becoming increasingly 'huge', hopefully the result will put everything in perspective; the pundits consider us No. 6.

6pts. by the w/e and our nerves can settle...

Defeatism. I'll show defeatism.

Unless we flog Derby by atleast 3-0, I'm going to right off the season.

And I don't know where people get off thinking that Tottenham is a guarantee of 3 points. To me their starting 11 seems a lot more settled, a lot more ballanced, and a lot more classy accross the field than what we can currently put out.

For the last two seasons I have gone into the start of the season thinking that we had teams that should have been challanging for Europe and a top six place.

I go into this season seeing; a Manager who doesn't like picking our best and only left back as a starter; a central defence that still has no clue and offers little hope, other than a young Irishman who is being played out of position; A midfield that lacks depth in talent and class, the three players who do show potential genuine class all play in the same position; A midfield that lacks even the semblance of a left winger; A central midfield squad that consists of three players, one who is a fair way down the wrong side of the hill, one who has started the season on the injured list and we are unsure of his abilities, and one who is in the team as a defensive midfielder but only retains his spot becuase he was our teams second highest scorer last season; A new 6'4'' striker who people are complaing about his lack of arial ability even though the player himslf has stated as much that his game is not about arial ability.

Either that or go into the season seeing; the ability of the manager to put a class 11 on field - Given, Barton, Hughes, Goma, Domi, Solano, Speed, Bassedas, Dyer, Shearer and Cort; with a decent bench to pick from Harper, Griffin, Dabizas, Gavilan, Lee, Gallacher and Cordone; with some promising youngsters waiting to get their chance - the Caldwell brothers, Kerr, Green, Coppinger and Chopra.

Tre my misgivings are very similar to yours, I wanted to say so much on the "Had time to think it over" thread. I have great faith in YBR, some of the 'lesser' teams have already had success against the big clubs, maybe the gap between top and bottom will be less this season?

If we don't get at least 4 points from the next two games I'll be getting a little worried, surely no need to panic after one defeat, away from home against the champions (well, that's what I keep telling myself!).

BTW this time last year YOU were prophesing relegation by Xmas!

Also I think you meant 'write off' and not 'right off'? :-7

Was I. I thought it was around Christmas I was prophesising relegation. ;-)

Smoggies top now, makemms(ptuh) top tonight provided Bradford don't beat Everton. Somebody up there definitely doesn't like us.

Relax it's only early doors. I won't be reading anything into any trends untill after about 10 games and when the European competitions start. Also be thankfull that NUFC doesn't lose any players to the Olympics.

-- Anonymous, August 23, 2000

Tre, you're schizophrenic man. Not seen anything like it since Dougal tipped Chelsea to both win the League and get relegated in the same thread ;-)

"Also be thankful that NUFC doesn't lose any players to the Olympics"
