Bad Switch Nearly Causes Trainwreck

August 21, 2000

Richmond-based CSX Corporation says a faulty railroad switch nearly caused another disastrous train accident. Last week, two freight trains in Fredericksburg nearly collided after one was given a yellow light when it should have been stopped by a red light. But a train crew caught the mistake and was able to radio the engineer to stop. A CSX inspector says old wiring in the switch box had deteriorated, causing the light to remain yellow.
