How to record VCD with "Sony CD Maker 2000"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

When I try to use my Sony CD-RW (8x4x32) and the software "Sony CD Maker 2000" (supplied by the manufacturer) to test or write a VCD, the program hangs every time. However, the software works fine for creating audio CD and data CD. Can somebody help?

I just want to add that this should not be a VCD format problem because I just copy the "dat" files from an existing normal VCD (i.e. no encoding is required).

If I am not mistaken, you are not supposed to just copy the .DAT file to harddisk and then try to make VCD using it.

Why not use VCDGEAR (http://www.vcdgear.com) and extract the MPEG file from the existing VCD. Then use this MPEG to try out the Sony software. No encoding is required.

No you cannot just "copy" a dat file. Nor can you "create" a vcd by trying to make a data cd with all the directories and files supplied by an existing VCD.

You "can" do a disc copy of an existing VCD if it was authored to the same media (ie cdr/w). You can't copy commercial VCDs to CDR because they are made of a different type of media.

When you make a VCD from scratch .. you need "authoring" software. IE Adaptec EZCD Creator Deluxe, Nero, etc. What that "authoring" software does is to convert a compatible Mpeg-1 source to a *.dat file that is then burned to the cdr disc WITH other folders that contain files that were derived from the created *.dat file.

I think? you are trying to make a copy of a commercial VCD .. No? If you are here is what you need to do.

First get a program like WebFlix Pro. This is an Mpeg-1 editor that also has an option to "convert" VCD *.dat files back to regular Mpeg- 1.

Once you have the *.dat file converted back to a valid VCD compatible Mpeg-1, you can then use any of the VCD authoring (EZCD NERO etc) with the mpeg file to create your VCD.

If, however the VCD you want to copy is one burned as a "homemade" VCD onto a consumer 650 MB CDR disc, then you should be able to use any CD burner's "disc copy" utility to copy it complete.

HTH & good luck !
