Capturing From VHS To AVI

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I'm new to capturing video. I want to know what is the best method to capture from either a TV or VHS to AVI file. I want to eventually convert the AVI file to MPEG.

I know that you need the following:

1) A video capture card (AT TV Wonder) 2) VirtualDub 1.4 3) Huffyuv 2.1 codec 4) Panasonic Encoder 2.5

What I want to know is:

Can I use the ATI TV Wonder with the Huffyuv codec to capture from a VCR?

When capturing from a VCR, is the video capture on the ATI TV Wonder YUY2, UYVY or RGB?

What settings do I use with Huffyuv for best results?

What is the difference between YUY2 and RGB compression? In the configuration dialog, you set the compression method for both.

Ok,

RBG = 3 bytes per pixel Y = Luminance U = Cromance #1 Color V = Cromance #2 Color

UYVY = 2 pixes per 4 bytes. Luminace values sample at every pixel, and alternating color sampleing. One of the most popular 4:2:2 capture modes.

YUY2 = Swapped version of above YUYV would be more exact.

For huffyuv, just use the deafult. It's lossless, so the only diifrence between the modes is time vs power. I don't believe the RGB modes are supported in the ATI hardware, but YUY2 is.

Happy encoding
