Looks like sony's are really hit-and-miss for cd-r, and cd-rw playback. Support for SVCD is slim under sony's too.

Good luck. -E

The second generation sony DVD DVP 600D which is a 5 disc changer will read CDR (no CDRW) and will read properly authored SVCD disc with two qualifications: 1- it does not read the menu, 2- it does not always smoothly changes tracks. will play a single track well. The later model 650D had the dual laser removed and does not play CDRs. Best thing to do is to get the apex 600A if you are interested in SVCD which does properly use the menus for SVCD and is a bargain at $175. I originally choose the sony because of its 5 disc changer. Only later did I try VCDs ( will not play XVCDs MPEG1 at 2600 in VCD format) and then I tried SVCDs images from the internet (burnt with EZCD4.0) which revealed that it played them - a bonus. It definitely plays VCD 2.0 very well but I never tried a menu with these discs yet.\

If you want to try SONY - get a good VCD2.0, XVCD, SVCD made up on CDRW and CDR and try it. Please remember, the reflectiveness of the CDRW depends on the company which makes it inconsistent to read sometimes. The sony with the dual laser (if any are still available) has read any CDR I given to it and is very reliable).
