Don't want him to go....want the board to buckle to these crazy demands of a pay off even less.....

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

Gav, do you fancy him or something? ;-)

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

My lass fancies him, silly blind moo. Hold On...What does that say about me...?

I shall miss his occasional contributions. We may have saved money and helped sort out the attitude in the squad (i.e. you get paid to play so if you can't play you'll be sold), but make no mistake that we are weaker for his loss. Last season could have ended badly without that blinding 12 game streak from Ferguson (P12, W8, D3, L1 and 8 goals from him - 2 of the draws were the home games against Liverpool and West Ham where defensive lapses threw away wins) when he and Alan were such an unstoppable force.

from teamtalk; looks like the board have won!!! Duncan Ferguson's switch to Everton is back on once again with the player expected to arrive at Goodison Park for a medical on Thursday. Ferguson's switch had looked in danger of collapsing after the player's agent Dennis Roach attempted to negotiate a severance package with Newcastle - thought to be around #1m. However, whilst the Magpies have refused to budge, Everton have now offered Ferguson a pay hike from the original deal agreement. The Goodison outfit hope this will compensate for Newcastle's determination not to pay the striker a severance package - and could see the player complete his #3.75m switch before the weekend. The player will undergo a medical as soon as he arrives at Goodison Park and if he passes, will sign a deal worth a reputed #30,000 per week - #10,000 less than his current agreement at St James' Park. We await developments.

No TM I don't fancy him......you know you're the only one for me ;) still I'm downgrading my expectations for the season if he goes.....Cort is not a good enough replacement....

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

Gavbury, having witnessed Ferguson at first hand on the occasions he turned up i can honestly say he's not worth 40k a week. When l think of the way Les Ferdinand took his chance in the stripes Ferguson wasted his chance imho. Too lazy by far. I'm sad he's going because he's a threat - but not the player to build a team with. Cort might not be a good enough replacement or might be awesome - wait and see. But 6m for 2 crocks and a few million for dead wood is good work by Bobby. Let's say 10 mil is burning a hole in his pocket - what will he do with it? I would wait and see. Ferguson had the chance and blew it - forget him.

Apparently a stumbling block was whether Dunc could have his number 9 shirt back.

I hope Bobby would buy a replacement, either that or seriously start promoting Coppinger and get him in there.

Howay Dunc.....twist yer ankle getting out of that limo ;))

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

Damn! I should have kicked him at the training ground last week!

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

I've just watched the press conference. He's signed. Good luck Big Yin!

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

SH*T! I still can't believe we let him go so cheaply.

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

:(( did they announce how much the deal was?

-- Anonymous, August 17, 2000

#3.75m - even a half-fit Dunc is worth more than that. We're back to square one with no f***ing cover when our strikers pick up injuries. This has ruined my day. :-((

Steph:
Shearer, Cort, Cordone, Gallagher, Coppinger .... even Chopra!
We're nowhere near as short of cover as before. Perm any 2 of the first 3 wih Gally as back-up..... no worries

Shearer and Cort are the only proven strikers in the Premiership and whilst I agree this is more than some at this point in the season, we need a bit more of a guarantee than that.

The whole thing boils down to "if Shearer gets injured". I wouldn't be happy relying on Gallagher to keep the goals flowing in if he is called on due to another injury. In a way I'd like to see Coppy given his golden opportunity and lets all see how good he is. bit of a gamble though.

Not just if Shearer gets injured, but if more than 1 of them get injured. And with our record, it's only a matter of time. What I saw of the 2 friendlies in the US, Cort and Cordone were quite useful up front and with Gallacher doing his usual running about annoying the opposition...Shearer wasn't missed too much. This is what really had me excited about this season, knowing we had 4 first choice strikers and Gallacher a hard-working and useful back up. Shearer and Ferguson wouldn't be under the pressure to be fit and play every game. But could be the dangerous partnership when fit, and when injured we had 2 more strikers ready to step in and be just as dangerous. Now we've lost 1 option. Still in better position than last season in this area, but also back to being a bit precarious....again.

We've sold Kets, Robbo and Dunc, we've bought only Cort and Cordone. In my mind and somebody else on another thread (sorry forgot name, that is one less than last year. Okay Coppy may come up through the ranks but I think it really leaves us short. Trouble is if we sign another big name, Cort will be pissed off as he must be expecting to be Al's partner now.

Strange situation which I think will be resolved very soon. If Bobby's got somebody lined up he'll arrive soon, if not go Coppy go!
