Order in the opening credits

I was wondering, is there a specific reason the cast members fall in the order that they do in the opening credits? I mean, it's certainly not alphabetical, and I was thinking AE is first because a lot of people think of him as the leading actor, but why is Benton last? I never understood that.

Read the thread: Laura or Alex--Third Billing. It explains kind of why certain actors are listed in the order they're in--it isn't alphabetical.

being last billed in the credits is an honor just as first is. look at the west wing;martin sheen is last billed and he is the lead actor.

My one point five cents... I heard once upon a time that actors will negotiate to have their name listed last with words such as "and," "including," "with," etc. in the opening credits of movies. I imagine it must be the same with television.

One thing on that other thread, the cast list is obviously not in senority, because Eriq LaSalle is ALWAYS last. He has been as long as I can remember.
