excessive licking

We have a black toy poodle bitch which is nearly 2 years old, she has recently started to lick her paws rather excessively. We have trimmed the fur right back to see if there is anything to see ie any thorns etc but there is nothing, she seems very healthy in every aspect although she is a very nervous dog. Is this anything you have come across before, I am starting to think it could be a behavioral problem, can you offer any advice.

HI Your dog probably has an allergy because dogs first show allergies by licking their feet or in their ears (shaking head etc.) You will need to go to the vet probably for prednisone and antihistamine. Its not a behaveoral thing at all so dont worry. My dog developed an allergy at age 8, just like people it may start at any age. It may be a new food or ragweed. The meds will give fast relief. Best Wishes Debbi
