Magpies move in with #5m offer for Bellamy

By Alan Nixon

16 August 2000

Newcastle United are making a #5m move for Craig Bellamy, but face a three-way fight for the player's signature with Tottenham Hotspur and Coventry City.

Bobby Robson, the Magpies' manager, hopes to have his offer accepted quickly for the Welsh international, who is keen to play in the Premiership. Norwich will take the biggest offer, leaving the final decision on the move to the player. Tottenham have made public their interest in the 21-year-old striker, while Coventry have joined the bidding in an effort to replace Robbie Keane.

Newcastle are facing a fight to keep their French left-back Didier Domi after Valencia made a #4m move for him. The top target for the European Cup runners-up had been Christian Ziege, but he now appears set to join Liverpool from Middlesbrough instead. One snag for the deal is Newcastle's #6m valuation of Domi.

Robson said after last night's reserve fixture, "we have had no contact with Valencia regarding Didier Domi". Nothing conclusive thre. What good is this. He might as well say nobody has phone me but if they did I would sell him and by the way Didier if you read this, yes I don't want to keep you if they make an offer!

Too much money for Bellamy I think 3mill is a more realistic figure, but they've already turned down a Wimbledon offer for that amount. I'd prefer Bellamy to Jason Euell though.

Norwich have accepted a #6 million offer from a mystery premiership club and has had talks with them, apparently its coventry!! AM

#6 million is silly money and I hope we don't enter this bidding war.

He's on his way to Highfield Road. Can't blame him, he'll probably walk straight into the first team there. Glad we aren't paying 6.5 mill for him.

All the noise made about buying British players not foreigners is shown up again. We pay #500k for Cordone and Coventry pay #6.5M for a lad with no premiership experience. It's no wonder managers go abroad for players.
