no sound when playing svcd on Philips DVD711

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have made a couple of home video vcds and thought about moving on to the next level, SVCD. So I downloaded the Nero-ready test clips from Rich Aubin's site and burned them. It played well on my DVD711 except that it had no audio. I thought it was encoded like that. I tested the clips for a while and found out that it should have audio because when I demuxed the clips, it produced .mpa file and I was able to hear the sound when I played it on my pc. I burned another test clip, but this time it was a cif that I got off the internet. When I played it, no sound can be heard. Any ideas? I will encode my own svcd as soon as I get home, I just want to hear from others who have experienced the same. Thanks.

Another thing, the svcds I tested displayed track number and time, plus it can rewind and fast forward. My home made vcds don't have those.

I know this is a stupid question, but are you sure that your rca audio outs from your dvd player go somewhere? If you have it hooked up to a digital reciever, it may not pass simple layer 2 audio that way...

Just a thought.

...you mean to tell me that you philips 711 plays SVCD? how come mine doesn't? it plays home-brewed vcd's just fine, though. any insite would be GREATLY appreciated.

To Eric,

The player is hooked up to the receiver in two ways, by digital coax cable and by rca. The receiver is always setup to get dvd inputs from digital coax. I will also check the connection when I get home. Thanks.

To Scot,

If I remeber it correctly, the player's manual listed svcd as one of the formats it supports. I'll look for the page where I saw it. Also, this site says DVD711 plays svcds:

Eric, I tried the rca connection and it worked. There's no audio when I select input coming from the digital coax. Thanks a lot.

My dvd-711 was playing vcd's just fine earlier this evening. Now all of a sudden it won't play the sound. Even tried a commercial vcd and no sound but I do get sound with music cd's.
