Keane sent off in Charity Shield game - Question . . .

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Hello everyone (first time caller and all that)

I have a question:

Keane has just been red-carded in a very boring Charity Shield match. Does this mean he will miss next Sunday's game as punishment?

Welcome Joh! Always glad to see a new face joining our happy band! Tell us something about yourself - are you local to the Golden City, or more long distance?

As for the red card - doesn`t it take a bit longer than a week to be processed?(:o)

Heeeeee! Twas my favorite moment of the game up until a loud and very clear rendition of "who the f**k are Man United" could be heard over the webcast.

To answer your question, I don't believe the suspension starts until the following week. dang

He will be suspended Jon, just not sure when it will take effect. I seem to remember one of our lads getting suspended from cards received in pre season friendlies last year.

Hi Galaxy

I'm an excile. I live in Cambridge and have done for years. (Was born in the RVI and lived in Low Fell, Gateshead)

I must confess to being an armchair fan - I used to go to the games around 82/83/84 when I lived there. I only get to see the lads play when they're away at Arsenal or one or two of the other London based clubs. Otherwise, I "watch it" on Radio 5 and have to suffer Alan Green's irritating anti-Newcastle waffle every match.

I really do miss the people and the place. I drove back from Scotland yesterday via the stadium. It looks incredible. I would love to get to see it from inside though . . .

PS - I think we will beat Newton Heath in their own backyard next week whether Keane's there to wave his handbag or not.

A warm welcome to the bbs Jon - stick around, you'll enjoy the crack.

Talking about 'crack', Roy Keane must be the biggest crack-head around. I found his display today in, let's face it a fairly meaningless fixture, simply incredible. He was running around like a guided missile, barking in the ref's face, and generally begging to be sent off.
Admittedly, he had been badly fouled by Hasslebaink a couple of minutes beforehand, but his tackle on the back of Poyets knee & calf was an absolute disgrace on a fellow pro, and even a referee, who clearly didn't want to use his cards today, had no choice whatsoever but the eject the jerk. Tosser!

I thought Chewsee were well worth their win with De Hoey hardly troubled all afternoon.

Anyone else find Andy Gray irritating today? His continual fawning over Becks was pewk-making, especially as he a fairly average game.

Cheers Clarky and everyone for your warm welcome

Think you're right about Chewsea; there's a curious article in today's Times claiming they are closing the gap on Newton Heath, both in terms of their off the pitch strategy (sales/marketing etc) as well as on it.

On a totally different subject, do you think Dunc is *definitely* going to Everton? The patter from SJP was that Cort had been bought to Add to our existing strike force and NOT as a replacement Dunc. A few weeks on and it doesn't sound half as convincing does it?. As a player Dunc reminds me of Howey: a class act but unreliable due to injuries which begs the question, Is it better to have an unreliable Ferrari which frequently breaks down or a reliable Polo?

Jonny Boy

BTW - my first car was a mini which wouldn't start if it rained and if I drove it through a puddle would grind to a halt. There's nothing like waving a ditributor cap (if this it's proper name) around at 2 in the morning in the vain hope it'll dry out and get you going again.

RE the suspension of the mad Irishman. They take effect 14 days after the offence so he will be suspended for three games from 27 August.

I hope Keane plays against us, I'm sure we can come up with a few songs which can wind up his short fuse.

Jon,

I guess there are a number of issues that could still prevent DF from signing for Everton, in particular his 'compensation' demands - allegedly a million each from both Clubs(!) - and the dreaded medical. Frankly, I'd be staggered if he passes the medical, and if does then it just shows what a shoddy exercise this is for at least some clubs.

If you've followed the other threads on this subject you'll know his possible transfer has generated a lot of heat, with many feeling we should keep him. Much as I admire DF as a player, I'm in the corner that says players who's fitness is unreliable over an extended period are not much use to the Club, and can fully understand and sympathise with BR's decision to offload them.

If we are successful in getting #6mm for DF and Howey, I believe that's good business - particularly if the money is well spent on replacements.

To answer your other question - IMO it would be better to have a reliable Porsche!

Personally, I believe the priority right now is a truly commanding CB, followed by another striker, preferably left-footed. I'm not keen on the Jason Euell suggestions, and would much prefer a pacey, skilful striker.

jon - at least if you can`t get to a match, you can join the fun on here on the matchday thread! It`s a lot of fun - listening to the webcast and posting on the matchday thread. At least it a little bit more interactive! Try it! (:o)

How absolutely bloody typical!!!

(news article on Ananova url)
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson claimed referee Mike Riley created the situation which led to skipper Roy Keane's sending off in the Charity Shield clash with Chelsea at Wembley this afternoon (ptuh!).

"The referee waited too long to act," said Ferguson. "There were a lot of players going in hard right throughout the game. You have to be fair to both camps and we were just waiting to see how long he (Riley) was going to leave it. It is a showpiece occasion but if someone commits a yellow card offence, the appropriate action should be taken." "It is a blow because Roy is important to the team and is a great captain," he said. "I think he will be disappointed himself but we have got a good squad and we will just get on with it."

Keane would be far better served by his Manager telling him it was a disgraceful tackle that could easily have crippled a fellow pro, and that he will not tolerate behaviour like that which both harms the reputation of his club, and ends up with the Captain, and perhaps most influential player, sitting in the bath while a fairly well poised game at 0-1 continues without him.

Fat chance - tossers, both of 'em.

In the Charity Shield at the start of 1997-8 you may remember Poyet making his debut. He was welcomed to English football by a flying kick to the head from a Newton Heath player and missed the start of the season. Needless to say this incident, which transgressed at least 3 rules simultaneously, went totally unpunished. The Newton Heath player? Why, it was lovely cuddly Roy Keane.

I've only seen a brief clip of the match, namely the psychopath's tackle but don't know whether he got a straight red or two yellows. I'll assume it was two yellows because frankly, that lot from Stretford have to kill someone to get a straight red.

-- Anonymous, August 13, 2000

nope, Kuddly Keane got a straight red. hee. Have yet to see any clips from the match as neither CNN/SI nor BBC World News showed anything. weird, cause one of them usually jumps at the chance to show Heath. BBC had 2 seperate interviews with Kuddles last week alone.

Simon Barnes' column in the Monday Times is a rather amusing read
Who's the psycho swinging that zimmer frame?
