Y2K survival food - $35,000 worth - up for sale News-Journal wire services

PLANT CITY - For sale: powdered butter; broccoli, peas and corn. Just add water, mix and eat.

A man is taking offers for $35,000 worth of survival food - enough to feed a family of four for seven years; or one person for 30 years.

Gary Britt and five other families from this city 25 miles east of Tampa bought 400 cases - six cans to a case - of dehydrated Y2K survival food through the Internet. Jan. 1, 2000 came in without problems and now Britt and the others have put their stash up for sale.

"Food, survival. 30 1-year units. 10 year shelf life. Price negotiable," reads Britt's classified advertisement.

Britt, 45, is a sign store owner by vocation and an Elvis impersonator by avocation.

So far, Britt said he's gotten four inquiries, one of them serious. He hopes to recoup 75 percent of the money spent. It cost each family about $6,000.

He hopes the food, fruit, juice, cereals and other goods will be sold in the next few months.

"This is hurricane country," Britt says. "If there was a hurricane, this product would go overnight."

Figuring it would be easier to sell as a unit, all the families stacked their boxes in a shed at Britt's sprawling rural home.

"I got the role of selling it because I'm a good salesperson," said Britt. "Or more likely, because I agreed to do it."

Just give the stuff away, or hold on to it until the next disaster, then offer it freely to those in need. Can you imagine Noah asking God for a refund for the lumber and labor if no flood had come? I don't think so........
