San Francisco Lightship

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

The last year of the operation of this semi-permanently moored lightship, anchored serveral miles of the Golden Gate, was 1971.

What has become out of this ship, I believe Coast Guard Ship 523, and where is it now?

Yes, that is the correct number for the last lightship. You can find a(n) historical summary at: . It doesn't completely answer you question but there is plenty of good info there. I had the pleasure of spending a few hours on board her in 1960. I was sent out to her while she was on station to check and tune up her surface search radar transmitter. This involved working in the antenna base above the bridge. After some minutes a fog bank moved in and the diaphone (fog horn) was turned on. I can tell you that trying to work on delicate elecronic equipment within 5 feet of an operating diaphone is a memorable experience.
