Answers

And the Chronicle leads with Shearer declaring himself fit for opener.

Stunned.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Nothing about this in the Ronnie but they carry the story that YBR has a left fullback and a midfielder lined up as soon as money is forthcoming with the sale of Hamilton, Marcelino, Serrant, Charvet and Brady. - I wish:-(

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I shouldn't imagine we got much up front in the way of cash for Dunc. The fee will probably be around 3-4 mill rising to 6-7 depending on appearances.

Don't really see why we need a new left back unless Domi is sold. Bliddy hope not.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I'm not happy about this.....we can argue all day and all night about what he did and didn't do and about how he was always injured but there's no doubting the fact that when he and Shearer played together they were a potent strike force....we need strength in depth and had it, now we don't....

Let's hope that YBR does have a replacement in mind and that this replacement is GOOD!....VERY GOOD! :((( I'm praying that YBR doesn't count Cort as Yin's replacement cos IMHO that leaves us a striker short....

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Jason eUELL INCOMING, THEN?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I chuffing hope it's not Jason Euell.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

That's it, sign the Womble stars. Now just remind me where they finished in the league last season. I've heard that YBR has first shout on Euell at around #6M.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Hopefully it'll be Recoba from Inter (YBR is a fan). Robbie Keane, Hakkan Sukur and a Balkan chap failed to score last night for Inter while Ronaldo and Vieri are injured, which leaves the incredibly talented Urugayan with no job. Please please please. It's about the only move that could make up for losing Dunc at the moment. I loved that man.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I hope this is not another NUFC.com trick to take the piss out of Teamtalk!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

We still need another striker if Yin has gone. Shearer, Cordone, Cort and Gallacher are not (IMHO) enough for the EPL. What aboot KP?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Wash your mouth out, Screacher. KP indeed!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I trust you jest Screacher!

I agree that we cannot hope to thrive this year, as opposed to just staying up, on the strikers we have without Dunc.

I hope Bobby has got an ace deal up his sleeve here, there are a lot of people who rated Dunc.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Trying to look on the bright side, at least we aren't paying him #40k a week any more. However, Everton now have a much better side than we have. I hope we go and buy someone fairly special. Now.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Well, my KP remark was somewhat TIC (tho I still think he's a decent player). However, there's still a few Johnies knocking around who I'm sure YBR has been keeping pabs on. I really do hope if we get some dosh for Yin that it goes on strengthening the forward line and not m/f defence. We've enough dross in the defence to subsidise a purchase if only we could get rid of 'em.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

God, the uncertainty is appalling.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Don't worry the official site will update the situation in about a fortnight :0)

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Oh shut up Dougal. You're back to the boring "we're the worst team in the land" cr@p. Floods! Oops - sorry I forgot, they signed Gazza in the close season.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Why don't you shut up, Screach? I think we;re better off without a 40K a week stone around our neck provided we can get a replacement. However, Everton have Campbell, Ferguson, Joe Max Moore, Jeffers - all of whom are top notch forwards.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Great minds - just went over to Blueview and Tony is on there asking the Everton fans what they've heard. Nowt according to the response.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Well it's an hour since NUFC.com unleashed the sentence and I can find no other sites carrying the story. Is it August Fools Day?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

There is a possibility that NUFC.COM are trying to trick someone....they don't seen to like Dunc that much..

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Sorry in advance Dougal...but I can't believe that you REALLY SINCERELY believe "Everton have Campbell, Ferguson, Joe Max Moore, Jeffers - all of whom are top notch forwards. "?????

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

At 12:18 we wrote: "Duncan Ferguson has signed for Everton - no more details at present: Fee tba

Looks as if Bobby has got his required cash injection for further transfer dabblings - incoming expected imminently...

PS - We did tell you the Dunc to the Huns story was cobblers !"

Well, it's now nearly an hour later, and nobody else has gone with this story - either we're ahead of the pack, or the victims of a very elaborate windup. We'll continue to try and work out what the hell is going on and update here as and when...i'll start by asking in the poeple in the pub next door...

"Que Sera Sera" as Doris Day would say.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Aye and weve got Shearer , Cort , Axl and Gallacher with Dyer and Bassead behind .. nae bother man .. i bet Berb has done a good deal and basically replaced Yin with Cort , canny business , but the best thing Berb has done is lighten the payload .. therell be a few new signings yet this season just watch ... i think this is the right thing to do , we need a team of fit young lads man not a bunch of crocks and this is what hes doing ... ive told yers before , have faith : - ))

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

NUFC.COM are now questioning whether they have been wound up. Maybe the press that they rountinely slag off are taking revenge? Maybe it's a Tony Horne special...

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Ferguson - needs no introduction. Campbell got injured but had a better strike rtae than any one in the PL last season. JMM scored gaols and created some and he was only there for the last few weeks of the season.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

If the Dunc story proves to be correct, I tend to agree with Sting. And don't forget Coppinger and Amoebi who seems to have been promoted to first team training. I've always thought that this year is a year for re-building - getting some money for Dun would allow this. I agree, if we were really going for it this year, we would need more top class strikers, but it's not a realistic option just yet.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Damn it's gone quiet......very spooky :(

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Lets see how wee really feel about this ... i m happy if he goes , what abt everyone else ?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Gutted.

Can't afford someone else in the same class so we are bound to be weakened by the sale.

Before anyone argues that he's only worth half a player because he misses half the games, let me remind you that half as good a player playing every game would still never achieve as much. It's the same as how 2 men can carry a grand piano but one of them can't carry half a Grand Piano on his own. Ferguson is class. Andersson was not. Dunc scored more goals for United in half as many appearances as Andersson. Forget the price, forget the wages, concentrate on the ability.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Softie, I see what you mean, but I cannot justify #40k per week for him however hard I try. What I really would love is for us to make a visionary signing of a, say, Di Canio, for #1.5 million, pay him #20k a week and have one of the best strikers in the PL.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

'Forget the price, forget the wages,'

If only YBR had that luxury...

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Windy,

We rationalized each and every one of Dalglish's sales and signings on the "it makes good business sense" level and woke up too late to discover that we were left watching a steaming pile of donkey's turds.

Simple rule of thumb: replace quality with quality. Selling before buying has brought us nothing but grief in recent history.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I would hate to see him go, he inspires the team & the crowd and terrorises defenses. He and Shearer are a dream partnership.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Agreed Dougal, and hopefully Cordone is precisely that.

I'm just a little stunned here: the Cort, Ferguson, Shearer triuvirate had me more excited than I've been since Shearer, Ferdinand, Asprilla.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Softie,

I share your concerns, but the underlying reasons for Dalglish's predicament were the crap that he brought in. YBR has been buying, and even assessing, before selling. If Duncan is sold, one can only assume he has been very pleased by Cort and Cordone, and perhaps as you yourself are, impressed by Coppinger. As I've touched on above, this season isn't one were we'll be challenging for the title. Next season we will want to be in that position though, so astute financial management now will be all the more important later when we will need to push the boat out more financially.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Niall and Biffa now say that their source is sticking to his guns and that the only response from Goodison and SJP is "no comment". So that's that then. Best not miss the 6.00pm News, eh?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I think NUFC.com have just been had, I've checked all the other sites and nbot a smidgeon and I personally would be pi**ed off if he went. We have thge potential of having the best forward line in the country> Why spoil it?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Windy,

You're right, but I'm seriously concerned about Cort and Cordone. They haven't been given a chance to show how they settle into our lineup in a competetive situation (JDT looked awesome against PSV but never managed it in anger) and, since we aren't in Europe, I can't see the need to hurry anything until we're sure.

I was wondering when someone would slap me with the Coppinger :-) Simple truth is that he's not ready to take on Arsenal or Man Utd: Derby away at the back end of the season possibly, but not when everyone is still full strength.

I had been busy parading the back page of the Ronnie round the office for the enjoyment of the other 3 season ticket holders on this floor and we were all delighted that it was going to be Dunc and Al as the likely starters to give Stam nightmares....and then NUFC.com dropped the big one. Ouch!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

'No comment' to me normally means there's something to it. If it was complete fiction, the response is usually 'we don't know anything about it', or outright denial. If we get #7million for him, it's got to be the right thing.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I'm really gutted about it....when fit he's a definite plus in our side as someone else mentioned he terrorises defences and lifts everyone else (crowd included!), him and Big Al are a handful for anyone....I'm not convinced that Cort can pull his weight in that department...I'm not convinced anyone can which is why I'm so gutted!!!

Doug's I don't care if he's on 100k a week! he's a definite plus to our squad! get rid of the dross who are the REAL wastes of money first....

Sting, surely this would've had to have gone through on Bloomberg if pen had been put to paper? I take it you've heard nowt?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Softie, i know, re pre-season form, once bitten...

It is a risk, and ultimately it's down to YBR's judgement. Should Cort and Cordone flop when the real action starts, it will have been a bad decision. Success or failure is a result of these decisions, but we (or YBR in this case) need to keep taking them to move forward.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Gav, I keep checking the Listing Authority Regulatory News Service where we should announce the sale and there's nowt. It may be a 4 o clocxker/6 o clocker (ie. once market has closed) as Softie says.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Great really great. I read it too on .com

I was about to go to bed, my first early night in about 2 months. It is 9:45pm here.

Now I am going to have to stay up and watch Skynews on cable at 01:30.

If there is nothing on there up at 06:30 to watch Sportsline.

Thanks a lot! Good night all. I will be loging on at 0730 - 0800 from work as well, about 00:30 - 01:00 your time.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

But Windy, we surely don't NEED to sell him...the books are fairly balanced, season tickets sold and more money than ever about to flood the game from TV.....it's an uneccessary risk in my view unless YBR has a replacement already targeted and about to sign....and I don't think Euell is a suitable replacement.....

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

We can't have done any business yet officially as the Stockmarket would need to advised.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Nowt on bloomie , i can smell a rat .. damn .

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

If this is true, I'm going to be very gutted. Not surprised, well surprised that it's happening this soon, but after an evening in a Columbus bar, I had the feeling that it was going to happen at some point. Not so much by what was said, rather what wasn't said. Still think it's too soon to get rid of a proven forward. That spirit, passion, ad ability to terrorize defences is not going to be replaced easily. :-(

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Agreed Gav. We don't need to sell him for financial reasons. We could keep him as another attacking option. Obviously in a year's time we would get nowhere near #7m ( a year older, another year of potential injuries, a year nearer the end of his contract), and we would continue paying his high wages. We could afford it, I'm sure. It's not really the issue. It's purely whether we think we could getter better use out of #7m+, not necessarily now, but later. The offer for Duncan won't last. Bank it, so that when the opportunity arises for a good purchase, we're not left out because of lack of funds. Sure, it's a risk, but I'd take it. I think despite Ferguson's threat, his presence tends to encourage other players to aimlessly hoof the ball to him too much.....oh I don't know, I suppose I'm just convincing myself that it's a good decision as Softie said earlier ;-)

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I suspect someone somewhere may be extracting revenge on nufc.com. Can't see Everton match his wages and would he really take a pay cut?

Opinions seem very sharply divided on the wisdom of selling him. Provided the fee was around 4 million I'd snap Everton's hand off myself.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Apparently he has been spotted at a hotel in pool. Non appearance at training, very suspect. Me thinks he's gone, too bad because I really thought he brought something to the camp, I loved his passion, remember when he almost chinned Roma by himself. loved that. See ya Dunc, please don't go and have a great season somewhere else

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

stop it syme , that was a truly great moment when he chinned the Roma lads , im starting to get a bit tearful no ....Flooooddds ... mind you on the other side of the coin his 2 wembley appearances were both shite , ahh well ...

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Latest from nufc.com:

"From another well-connected personage comes a guarded thumbs up over the validity of the story below, but also news that the same stumbling block that ko'd interest from Man City could again scupper the move.

The sale of Ferguson to Everton (or indeed anyone) may well depend on the ability or willingness of his new employers to pay his insurance premiums, assuming they can arrange coverage at all."

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Well here's hoping the fuckers can't manage the insurance and we keep him!!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

And knowing our luck, the uninsurable bits of Dunc would wear out just as the uninsurable bits of Big Al wore out.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

From my office window I can see YBR standing on the steps of SJP talking to and apparently appeasing an angry mob :-))

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I' know i've said it before, but i'll say it again. He's the manager and until he proves that he can't manage [like TSM and TDM did] , then i'll back him to the hilt.

Sting's grandad knows what he's doing.

Andy Cole to Man U anyone?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Or Ferdinand to Spurs?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

"Or Ferdinand to Spurs" and then no transfer activity until January by which time the last remaining fit striker had requested a transfer and we waited with baited breath to unveil Andersson. Jesus. "He wasn't sold for footballing reasons". Argh!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Ferdinand's injury record since we sold him surely vindicates the timing of the sale. I doesn't excuse the lack of any sort of replacement before we sold him, and the crap in a hairband that eventually came months later.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I wudnt sell him, even for 8 million. If we can get half of a season of him at his best, this would be invaluable. We thankfully now have cover for him for the other half. His contribution cud easily influence wether we get into Europe or not..########! If YBR buys a replacement striker, theyd be looking for 25K a week anyway and they cud be shit.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

We may have to accept that he perhaps wanted away and, more crucially, there may be all sorts of restraints on the board and Bobby. We have had a transfer deficit of about 6 millions for about 3 years now - maybe the banks are getting twitchy about this. I know the seats have gone well, but we this bond is a millstone in terms of our freedom to act unilaterally. The other thing is, if you look at our squad, it's still massive: ideally you'd get rid of Serrant et al. However, if you can't get rid of these characters, then get rid of an expensive player with big wages who isn't perceived as critical and pacify your creditors that way. Maybe NTL have had some input. Who knows?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Starnge to say the least The fact he was apparently not at training suggests something to all this The insurance bit is a laugh Surely Everton would have checked this out before - perhaps he needed a medical to see the extent of all the damage will sit on the fence with this one. A fit Fergie yes - but the trouble is games palyed is misleading as coming back after knocks, strains viruses itchy toes means inevitably the first few games are 'iffy' #40,000 a week for 20 or so appearences if we are lucky...you can understand YBR's thinking

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Having read all this, just imagine the agony BR must have gone through - IF of course the deal is on - he's also a punter like the rest of us. This must be a incredibly difficult decision for him, and of a similar magnitude to KK's dilemma over AC.

We all agree that DF is a terrific player, and to replace him 'like-for-like' would cost more than we can presently afford. The entire issue all really revolves around whether he is likely to stay fit and actually play a reasonable number of games for us.

IMHO BR is closer than the rest of us in making that judgement - and he is certainly not a fool. I truly don't believe he would consider selling DF if he felt he would get a significant contribution from him. If BR IS selling him then I feel we need to back his judgement.

Steph's exclusive interviews(and the bl**dy Ronnie nicked the Shearer one!)

9.20 this morning outside the training ground. Alan Shearer arrives.

Me: Hi Alan, How's the knee?

AS: It's fine.

Me: Will you make the Man U game?

AS: Definitely, I'll be there.

10 minutes later Dunc arrives. I asked him about his fitness which he said was good and whether he would make the Man U game "no problem".

Rest of report to follow when I have a chance to type it up!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

OOps!

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Apparently the story is in tomorrow's Sun - the fee announced is #5 million. It's just this minute been on Radio 5.

Back to the original topic! I've just found this on Toffeeweb - sorry if someone's already posted it:

Aug 10: Reliable sources on the ToffeeWeb Forum say that Everton have been negotiating with Duncan Ferguson all day, and the sticking point is now his wage-packet - he is unhappy about taking a pay-cut in order to return to his beloved Blues...

Now these negotiations which have been going on all day - di Steph see them at the training ground? I think we should be told.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Trying again

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

and again

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I can see how you've turned on h2 and not turned it off Steph, just trying to undo our efforts now.

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

Well?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I had to turn off every "h" switch one by one. Anyone know if there's a universal way to do it - like "default"?

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

OI !! Pack it in with your bold and font stuff, ya bunch of winnits ya ;o)

Back to the real topic - I certainly wasn't expecting all this when I came in this morning ! Thinking about it from a distance, it does seem clear that Dunc has been seriously touted around by the club for a while, hence all his non-appearances in the States and rest of pre- season. His moving is therefore completely down to price and wages. Even if it all falls through with the Toffees - fairly unlikely now IMHO, given Dunc's desire to be there and the fact he realises his current manager obv. thinks him dispensable - then you can definitely expect to see him flogged off at some point during the season, prob. to a panicking Boro or Villa manager desperate to save his own bacon following injuries and a slide down the table. And what sort of performances will we see from an unsettled top player ??

Much as I'd love to see Dunc stay and do the business for us, Big Al, Cort & Axel etc. should be enough to keep us solid through what is STILL a rebuilding year folks. Think about it - even if Dunc were to stay the season, we're still a long long way from having the quality to be one of the top few teams in the country. I do know some of you are insistent we're gonna be up there challenging this year - all I can say is I think you should do your health a favour and stop smoking that stuff ;o))

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

But smoking that stuff is what keeps us sane. ;-)

Anyways...Dunc really was carrying a calf strain and also a bit ill during most of their time in the states. Whether the illness was of the bug variety, or the overindulgence variety, I can only speculate....

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

For what it's worth, I love the guy, don't want to see him go, hope we keep him, injury's an'all. Yes the pay packet is big, but you know, when AS had his ankle done in, lots wrote him of as finished as well, including a lot on this or the old Communicata board. I honestly hope we keep him. When the lad is "on" he is awesome. Scares the Sh!t out of defences. I said it after the Roma game and I will say it again..."Bravo Duncan Ferguson". He does have a serious role to play at NUFC.

PiC

-- Anonymous, August 10, 2000

I turned the HTML off after "OOps!" Don't know how you guys managed to turn it on again!

-- Anonymous, August 11, 2000

One of the ironies of this is that there was so much speculation that Shearer would be off as soon as we bought Dunc... I suppose we've at least stopped worrying every time he looks pissed off....

-- Anonymous, August 11, 2000

How many games does Flo start for Chelsea, Kanu for Arsenal, Solskjaer for Newton Heath? I would imagine it comes pretty close to the amount of games that Dunc actually starts. I may be wrong but I just feel that if we have Shearer, Dunc, Cort and Cordone we have a decent chance of making this a good season.

I know we should all keep faith in YBR but he has to be open to question like everyone else in life.

Who apart from Al would you want at the back post in the dying minutes of the title decider! :0)

-- Anonymous, August 11, 2000

Sorry Steph, you didn't turn it off. You sent "h" instead of "h2". Still it's orted now. Love the pics!
