Liverpool could be forced to close a section of their Anfield Road stand because of a problem similar to the one which caused the Millennium Bridge to be shut down. The "wobbling" first came to light during Ronnie Moran's testimonial in May when thousands of Celtic fans were packed into the upper deck of the stand. Council officials have advised Liverpool that they must produce a report ahead of the Premiership opener against Bradford City on August 19 before they can use the stand. Building control manager Keith Bold told the Sun: "We have told them they must contact us before the opening game of the season." Anfield chief executive Rick Parry said: "No decision has been taken at this stage about any possible closure of parts of the stand. "We are still conducting investigations with the builders and designers." The upper deck was built in 1997 by the Carillion company and the problem only arises when a large number of people stamp their feet on the ground at the same time. This causes a "swaying" motion. A major problem for Reds bosses is that the Bradford game is already a sell-out with all 45,000 tickets having been distributed.

I was at that match and can quite understand why it came to light then and not before. The Bhoys fans were in a very "supportive" mod that night. I was also in that stand for wor game last season. I didn't like that upper tier at all - far too close to the folks below, and from the sound of things, in danger of getting closer!

IMHO they should also check out the upper tier in that stand at OT that the Toon fans had rocking 'n rolling during the Spurs FAC Semi a couple of seasons ago.
I was down below and it really was bouncing far too much for my comfort.

I was with Screach on the bottom level for the 1st semi and those top two tiers looked pretty scary, I'm certain they aren't designed to take that kind of punishment!!

Simple answer is to install temporary supports, they may lose one or two seats in the process but it would put a lot of peoples minds at rest.

You simply distribute crisps to your fans before the game: meant to work a treat.

What about all the grounds in Sth America ? Their fans are forever bouncing up and down in unison and - thankfully there's rarely a problem there. And not just on the terraces but in upper tiers of the stands too.

Sounds to me like a case of the nervous nelly safety inspector. Same twats who try to tell us that standing up during a match is unsafe. Tony's right. If you didn't build the stand to meet specifications in the first place then bliddy reinforce it and get off our case. I've no time for them sort of b@st&rds.
