An unspecified amount of oil leaked from the controversial Temelin nuclear power station in the Czech Republic on Friday, Czech radio reported on Saturday. Plant spokesman Milan Nebesar was quoted as saying there was no danger to the environment from the leak, which happened during a scheduled test in the No 1 power unit's engine room.

He also said the room from which the oil escaped was not in the nuclear part of the plant.

Emergency services at the plant were alerted as soon as the leak was detected and started remedial work immediately, he added.

Plans to start operations at Temelin later this month have attracted protests from environmentalists and expressions of concern from the governments of neighbouring Germany and Austria.

The Czech government last week rejected an attempt in parliament to force a referendum on the issue.
