For those whose French is even more rusty than mine, the cause of the drooling is a description of a rumor of a 70-200 IS optic might be announced at Photokina.

and a description of a press announcement of Elan 7, explanation that Elan is the designation for EOS 50 for here in the states, plus the specification list of 7 focus points, 35 zone evaluative meter, ultra silent motor drive good for 4 fps.

One other thing to note: that Web site mentions that the Elan 7 is reported "in the foreign press" and several people have mentioned that the September issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine mentions the Elan 7, so that's probably where the original information can be found.

I've looked in a couple of stores around here and they still have the August OP in stock, so I haven't seen the September one yet. Someone said this is in the "In Focus" section, which consists of _very_ brief mentions (usually about six items to a page). I doubt there's anything more there, other than perhaps a photo of the body.

Rumor has it that the seven AF sensors are positioned in a diamond shaped array, rather than the conventional placement on the Rebel 2000. This does seem to be a trend, as Contax is using a similar array on the new Contax AF SLR, the N1. Time will tell...

Well, judging from the designation 7, the new Elan is probably meant to let Canon make as much money as did Elan 2 + Eos 5 :-)

Anyhoo...I'll wait a year or so after the Elan 7 hits the street before I start looking to replace my Elan II. I have a feeling sticker shock will be substantial with this camera (remember the EOS- 3's price when it came out on the market - ouch!)

There is no way that this ELAN 7 would be a replacement for the EOS 5. For one why should a semi-pro be content with features that the Rebel 2000 can offer as well. The EOS 5 replacement should give you a better than 7 points focus though I will take the 35 zone metering. ANyway, I am still holding by breath for the new EOS 5.

What made you think 35 zone meter is better than 21 zone meter? Based on bigger number is better than smaller number theory?

I don't think there will be a replacement for the EOS 5. I think the EOS 3 in fact was that, at least in the line up. Here is how I see it: The EOS 5 was almost a pro body at the time it was released, it had almost all features of the 1N (plus ECF, whisper drive), but at a lower price. The same applies to the EOS 3, it's got almost all the features of the EOS1V (plus ECF), but at a lower price.

However the EOS 3 got so much more expensive that they kept the EOS 5 in production, as the gap pricewise between the EOS 50(E) and the EOS 3 was too big. The EOS Elan 7(E)/30(E)? will sort of replace both the EOS 50(E) and the EOS 5 I guess. It will be a little more expensive than the EOS 50 and a little cheaper than the EOS 5.

The Elan 7 is only a replacement for the IIe.Again if one looks at past Canon history,the A2e was selling for $1000.00 in 1994 and for $769.00 in early 1998 both B&H prices.An Elan 7 at $600.00 will be a tough sell for a camera without spot metering,based on a Rebel 2000.Also at that price the difference between Rebel and Elan is too great.As the production of the Elan 7 increases,the EOS lineup should scale back in price.Elan 7 at $400.00,EOS 3 to <$800.00 and the 1V to below $1500.00.
