Hi

You are talking about the Sony DSC-S50 and S70!?

if so......

about a week ago I decided to go for the DSC-S50, it seem ideal, all the things I wanted in a digi cam in a nice small package.

However, today I went down my local PCWorld and had a look at both cameras, and I decided there and than I wanted the S70. Reasons:

1. 3.3 Megapixel (1.9 would of been enough, but hey!) 2. Viewfinder (I wanted a view finder! - If the S50 only had a viewfinder! This really pushed me towards the S70) 3. Bigger lcd screen - I didn't like the twisty screen, it seem gimmky and was small, also it seemed a waste of space (chunky). 4. Better quality lens 5. The buttons didn't seem in the right place (Maybe I'm being picky, but it felt akward to use) 6. The store had #50 discount, making the S70 only #100 more! so not a big difference.

If you can afford it, I would go for the S70. Saying that, The store didn't have any in stock so I haven't got mine yet, roll on 08/14/00!

Good luck!

Regards

Richard

Also I looked at the DC280, Tosh PDR-M4, Fuji MX1700, MX2700 and MX4700, all of which I liked and didn't like.

I second that -- plus the superb Zeiss Vario Sonar, which as far as I know is the only f:2 on a consumer digital camera. While the picture quality is excellent, be aware of the somewhat slow shutter response.

I agree with both of the guys who answered before me. The S70 is a much better camera. I bought one about two months ago and have taken a few hundred pictures with it. The pictures are always sharp and the color balance great. I have used it to take pictures in 1600 x 1200 mode, which would be similar to the size the S50 would take, and taken the same picture in the native 3 megapixel resolution 2048 x 1536. The native resolution does indeed show more detail and if you plan on making large prints the extra resolution might be useful. Also, if you actually go and play with the two cameras and compare them, you will like the feel and overal aestetics of the S70 better. The LCD is nicer, the lens is nicer, and the overal ergonomics are better.

Of course, S70 is better than S50. On the contrary, S70 is expensive than S50. Therefore, the crucial point is your needs. Better does not mean "value for money". If you only wants to take some family pictures, etc. and print them in 3R, I think S50 is enough. Otherwise, S70!!

To make your decision, think about your needs.

Wish the above may help you.

Aloha!!

If anyone is interested....

It looks like Sony has dropped the price of the DSC-S70 camera.....I ordered my last Saturday (picking it up tomorrow! - How exicted am I!) and paid #649.99 ($975) for it, the RRP is #699.99 ($1050) but I got #50 ($75) off because of their '#50 off any digicam over #300 ($450)' coupon.

Yesterday I looked on their website and the camera was #40 ($60) cheaper! I went down to the shop and got them to give me the #40 off, for a start I haven't even got the camera yet and the shop Price Promises up to 14days after purchase. so I got the camera for only #605! ($900) not bad eh?

Also the the other camera shops in my Area have also drop the price.

Now look like the time to buy...
