Domains and such

greenspun.com : LUSENET : digital ink : One Thread

(cut straight from the entry, because I'm lazy like that)

I need a home.

I'm thinking about getting a domain, but all the good stuff is taken. digitalink.com, digital-ink.com, etc. Eric suggested holduptherechachi.com, which I like, but I'm afraid it's too long/silly/inside-jokish. The only decent variation of "digital ink" that's left is digtlink.com, but I think it's way too easy to misspell.

So, if I can't find a domain name, I'm not getting a domain. So I either need a) help in finding a name, or b) help in finding a new home. I'm not too thrilled about free servers, and I'm not too thrilled about being hosted on some teenybopper domain, so that doesn't leave much choice. I could just move it over to my ISU space, but erm... I sorta only get like 2 MB of space, and I have all of those RealAudios/Videos.

Help? Thoughts?

digital-ink / digitalink .org .net .nu are all taken? what about just getting those personal .nu names like katie.nu or something.

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Okay, here's what's available, digital ink-wise.

digtlink.com, .net, .org

dig-ink.net, .org

digink.net, .org

digtl-ink.com, .net, .org

Do any of those look decent?

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

I think those are hard to remember. Um....

www.digitalinkjournal.com is free!

So is

www.katietrame.com

However,

www.ratsass.com

is taken!

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

If www.digitalinkjournal.com really is free, I'd go with that.

And, btw, if Steve is getting rid of misanthrope (and clearly he is), then where's Laurie going?

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

I thought she was quitting anyway?

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Laurie will stop writing her journal soon, but she plans to continue having a personal website. But now that Memory & Desire has been nominated for a Diarist Award, she can't stop writing just now because she would be disqualified. (There's a note on her index page explaining this.)

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

digital-ink.nu and digitalink.nu are both available... But digitalinkjournal.com is good, too. Just a little long, that's all :D

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Thanks for the explanation, David. :-) I still haven't made up my mind about having a homepage yet. If I do, I can just move it to my school space or ISP space or something. It won't require anything fancy, and it's going to be a "public" page anyway.

(Steve thinks I'm cheesy for keeping the page up through the Diarist Awards voting, but I think I'd look pretty cheesy getting disqualified too.)

And, Katie, I'm confused: first you said that you're thinking of getting rid of your journal, and now you're saying that you want to get a domain for the journal. Did I miss something?

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

http://www.tonic.to

digitalink.to is available

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Why don't you get a domain with Laurie? You can keep the misanthrope tradition. Just a thought.

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Am I dumb? If Steve is not renewing misanthrope.org, then it is up for grabs, right? So why not *ahem* grab it? Perhaps I am just ignorant.

Also, www.youareham.com is not taken! Can you believe it?!?! Of course, *I* am going to take it very soon....but still...

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

I was wondering the same thing about quitting now getting a domain, but I have no complaints! :)

I really like digitalinkjournal.com

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Why not buy the domain you're on off that guy? katie-trame.com or katie.net or something like that would be cool. =) I understand how much it sucks though. When I was all domain crazy I wanted empathy.net and I was set on that for the longest time and then I realized it was taken by some stupid advertising company... =( It was very depressing.

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

you can always give wannabejournals.com a shot :)

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Yeah, I was thinking of quitting, but I decided not to. I do need a change, though.

-- Anonymous, August 05, 2000

Re the .nu .to blahness..... I want either a .com, .net, or .org. I'm picky like that.

digitalinkjournal.com is a little long... and I want to a) have something I can still use if I ever kill the journal, and b) have something I can possibly use for other stuff besides the journal. Like what, I don't know, but you get the idea.

Steve is selling misanthrope.org... and to tell you the truth, I'm getting sick of the name. I mean, I am a misanthrope, but why have it be so obvious...heheh

So should I stick with something along the lines of "digital ink," or what? If I do, I'm thinking digink.net would be the best. But I could do something with my name, or my initials... or whatever. katietrame.com is OUT, though. So is ktrame.com etc. Ugh. Lameness.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

i'd go with misanthrope.org personally. then there's none of that "i'm moving, here's the new address" and if you're like me, "oh shit, i've lost the url". yeah.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

chachi.net is available... but you said you didn't really want that... sooo. Hmmm. I think digitalinkjournal.com is too long too, but we've already gone over that... maybe think about different words that describe your personality, that would work in case you decide to quit the journal. You could just randomly scan a dictionary for ideas. Ya never know.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

i like chachi.net or whatever.... domains are fun (i know cause i own 2). if you wanna be hosted at one (if you dont want a domain) choose from one of my domains - catchfire.net or alkalineshock.com ... lol

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

What about digitalkatie.com? It's like, the best of both worlds or something. If not, I vote for holduptherechachi.com. I can't *believe* it's not already taken.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

For some odd reason, dink.com came to mind. The reason I thought of that was because d could be short for digital and yeah then there's ink. I didn't come up with it because I thought you were a nitwit or anything. Hell I might even use dink.com for myself (if it's not taken).

Having been with Geocities from day one, I understand your hesitation to go with the freeservers. I do like Geocities in that you can at least move their ad banner to the bottom of the page and there are no popups.

I am thinking about moving the journal to either a domain a friend just purchased for a project we are doing together...or maybe giving johndoe.org a shot.

johndoe.org seems to be doing a really good job with the journals they have enlisted so far.

take care....good luck....

I'm rather keen on http://www.timiscool.com ... though to be honest, it may be taken, what with all those people agreeing...

Or how about

http://www.iwishiwastim.com http://www.timisbetterthanme.com http://www.ilovetimmorethaneric.com http://www.gregsmellsofpoop.co.uk http://www.timTimTImTIMTIMMMMMM!.com

All of which are surprisingly untaken...

http://www.digitalink.us.com

(register it www.us.com)

I like dink.com or .net or whatever.

digitalinkjournal.com is too long, true, but the real readers have your page bookmarked, so they wouldn't have to type it in, so it's not so bad. But as you said, you want something that can be used if you stop writing, so the journal thing at the end wouldn't work that way.

I also like the holduptherechachi.com. it's long, but funny, and I don't think anyone would care that it's kindof an inside joke thing. If you say it even once in your journal, they should understand that it's something that you say as well as a spiffy domain name. So I think you should go with that one, unless you've already eliminated it from the running.

Tim had some nice ones. I like the timiscool.com.

My vote's for digink.com.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

Katie,

You already know my stance on this issue, but I'll go ahead and say it again.

dig-ink.org

Like I said... it's just tastey.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

Katie, I cannot contribute a suggestion for your domain for in the end it will all come down to your decisiveness, but I want to inform you that GANDI.NET and DOTSTER.COM sell domains really cheap, $11.00 and $15.00 a year, respectively.

will@envybee.net http://www.envybee.net

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

I never contribute anything, but...

I really don't care for digitalinkjournal.com.

I'm much too much of a bum to check, but is ink.com/net/org taken? I'm sure it is. Pity, because you could always subdomain digital. http://digital.ink.com. That would look nice.

I'd recommend that you pick a nice new name and flaunt it. Getting a domain for oneself is like turning a corner, starting fresh, all the fun cliches. You deserve a domain of your own.

If you're *truly* strapped for space, I might be able to shove aside some of my empty space for you. I would do this for very few people.

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

Okay folks, it's official..... I'm going with digink.net.

Could possibly be ready by the middle of this week.

My own domain. God, I feel like a badass.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2000

I put dink.net or dink.com or whatever up days ago.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2000

okie...I realise this is waaay too late now, but I'm gonna post it anyway. Call me stupid *prepares to be called stupid* but don't Eric and Greg both have domains? I'm sure either or both of them would be prepared to host you, and surely they don't count as teenybopper domains?

But like I said, it's too late for that now anyway, so ignore me.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2000

Eric doesn't host. :)

I actually asked Greg about it a few weeks ago, but I decided it would probably be better just to go with my own domain. For one thing, my realaudios and videos take up a lot of space, and I don't want to be hogging all of Greg's space... and besides, I've been wanting a domain for awhile. I thought about getting one last year, but I didn't because I figured I could just mooch off Steve for as long as possible. :)

I could actually stay at misanthrope.org until December, but oh well. I need a change now, anyway.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2000

Katie, give me two months and i'll host you for $5.95 a month. And anyone else who wants to sign up too. I'm in the process of starting a hosting site specifically for journallers, it will be up as soon as i can manage.

-- Anonymous, August 07, 2000

SUPERFUNKYCHICKEN.COM

There ya go. We're not up yet, but umm well duh we'd love to host you. But hey, your choice. Just so you know, we're not going to be a typical teenybopper site or anything. Fuck no. And we have unlimited space, so yeeeaaaahhh. I mean, I'd have to check with Katy, but I can't see a problem :P
