**Skinhead recruiter indicted in church desecration ** (Tenn.)

A recruiter for a skinhead organization conspired to intimidate and threaten black members of a Knoxville church in violation of their civil rights, a federal indictment has charged. The indictment against Christopher David Kuykendall, 22, of Knoxville stemmed from the Aug. 28, 1999, desecration of the New Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

``It was part of the purpose and plan of the conspiracy to desecrate the New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church by using a large, red marker to write intimidating and threatening racial epithets and slurs, and through such intimidation and threats of force to prevent black persons from enjoying events and services held at the church,'' the indictment charges.

Kuykendall and an unnamed co-conspirator, who is described as being ``known to the grand jury,'' drew swastikas and used the words die, hate, heil and skinheads, among others, in their writings on the church's doors, according to the indictment. Knoxville Police Department officers arrested Kuykendall and a 17-year-old boy hours after the vandalism was discovered when the two were seen near the church, according to police reports. The case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Bolen, was later turned over to the FBI.

The federal indictment said Kuykendall was a recruiter for Confederate Hammerskin, a skinhead organization whose members advocate white supremacy and separation of black, Hispanic, Jewish and other minorities from whites. http://www.stlnet.com/postnet/News/wires.nsf/National/8C11547DEA4E4D5286256930004C1B08?OpenDocument
