Wigs - Do Peeps Still Wear Them For Fun?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Gwen's Trailer Trash Forum : One Thread

I have really short hair, which I love. But yesterday, I got this crazy craving to get a wig! Am I insane? Something in the Peggy Lipton style, I think. People used to wear them. Do they still wear them for fun?

Any advice?

Oh I forgot this question? Are men still crazy about long hair, even if it's fake?

I have below-the-shoulder hair and it looks fine. However, I also have about ten wigs, and most of them are those Aida bob things with bangs. Off the top of my head, I know I have strawberry blonde/red, ashy blonde, black, dark brown, aqua and burgundy bobs and a long BArbarella-style dirty blonde convertible wig (layered or blunted depending on which side you put to the front) and a cobalt blue Cleopatra (long) fringed one. I'm forgetting some others I think.

Answer would be 'yes'.

Men just looooove long hair!!! Eveyrtime im out clubbing guys always come up behind me when iM dancing & touch it. it sends shivers uup my spines! Maybe one day I'll get a wig.

when I had really long hair, (some) men used to do that to me too. i'm probably just a bitch, but I hated it. Strangers. Touching my hair. Gave me shivers, too, but not in a nice way.

I don't know that I would wear a wig, but only because the nice ones (i.e. the ones that don't scream: HEY! I'm wearing a wig!!) seem to be really expensive. I think it's a fun concept to be able to change your "look" at will, so go for it.

Rock on, Milla.

Lisa, if people don't generally wear them, you should just do it anyway. I always wanna get one, but then I say, "When would I ever wear it?" Just like the fucking tiaras.

Let's start the trend, y'all!

Milla, where do you buy yours?

Everytime Milla posts something I think "she does totally rock!" (I'm not kissing up here, either..)

Man, I just got back from the wig store...that is so fun! I took my roommate (who is appalled at the whole idea) and 2 friends from work (one male one female.) The wig lady put one on me that is quintessential "North Florida Floosy." It was dirty blonde and shaped like that guy's "mane" from that old Beauty and the Beast TV show with Linda Hamilton. I looked like a lion, but the guy that was with us couldn't put his eyes back in his head. Ha! Boobs and hair, that's the key, I guess. I didn't like the color, but the style said "roar!" It wasn't hot on my head, but it was hot on my shoulders (like a fur coat.) The female friend couldn't keep her hands out of it. She wanted to braid it, etc. It was hilarious!

I'll probably get one just to finally exert that hypnotic control over some men, that I never could during my school days. woohoo!

oh yeah. Gwen, you don't wear your tiaras? If you can't be a princess in your home, when can you be?

I could wear a tiara with that wig I tried on, but you'd never see it with all the hair. Do you get the Trinity Broadcasting Network over in Austin? That lady on there has the scariest purple rinsed hairpiece I've ever seen. Now that takes the cake.

This is a touchy subject for me, because I grew my hair to a length of 2'3" last decade, and NOT ONE BOY *EVER* GAVE A CRAP. Not ONE. I dated a tiny handful of boys during that time, and none cared about my long hair, or if they did, they never said a word to me about it.
My hair got in the way of kissing and it was hot in the summer and I could never get it into any cool styles because it was too long. I dyed it dark, dark brown with purple highlights, then changed to a gorgeous, gorgeous!! bright coppery red-orange, which got me attention...but never once from anyone except girls and old scary men I passed on the street. It really pissed me off (and still does, obviously). I held out, keeping my long tresses, until 1997, at which time I said Fuck This Shit and got it cut shoulder-length. It stays this length because it's easier to deal with and because I'm mad at Boys for making me the exception to the rule that Boys Love Long Hair. I must be just so totally repellant in every way that even beautiful, soft, thick long hair couldn't help me out, I guess.

I hate everyone.

I had long hair when I was younger but it's never been thick. Maybe my friend was happy about the "thickness" of the wig, in addition to length.....hmm.....they do like it "Stevie Nicks" billowy, cause I saw their posters of her in the dorm. Doesn't she have lyrics to that one song: "stand back, stand back, while my hair get's some room, I cannot hear from you..."

I buy wigs in stores like Fifi Mahoney's, Junkman's Daughter, Throb, etc. Aida bobs are $26 each. (And thanks for the compliment, Lisa!)

I have tiaras too, but only wear the one I made out of feathers. I'm actually quite shy, but when there's a special occasion, I'll dress for it. Even if I have to make it a special occasion. Also, wearing wigs when the weather is damp, windy or humid means that your hair looks manageable and neat even if your real hair would wimp out, frizz, tangle, kink or droop. ;)

Besides, YOU rock for knowing who Peggy Lipton is. Tops! (You're the ginchiest. Go, Mod!)

I never mentioned where I got this whole wacky idea from. Amy Sedaris (Strangers With Candy) said that she gets like 3 wigs every Christmas to goof around in. I thought that was so funny, and then thought "why not?"

I have a wig. It has short black hair. Sometimes I just don't want to be me, so I go out with the wig. I'll go grocery shopping, or hang out with some friends, and it helps me forget about the problems or whatever I'm having and lets me be a different person. Sometimes if I'm at a bar and I have the wig on I'll tell people my name is Mariah.

I saw a Goth wig online today. Long and black with red on the strands around the face.....It'd look bitchin' with those "goth catnip" cigs.

Paul and my stylists are the only ones who comment on my hair, really. Lisa, is TBN the one with that Tammy Faye Jr. chick with the HUGE bi-level blonde hair? And sometimes she sings, I think? And she hosts with some non-descript guy and they're always talking to some guest on their little ornate chairs? If not, I need to find out who the hell those people are. (They're always on channel 99 here.)

Whenever Frederick's of Hollywood sends me a catalog, I look at their wigs and imagine which one I would buy if I had to buy one. Usually I pick something long, layered to shit, and dark auburn.

My dad tells a story about this chick (in the '60s) walking into their homeroom in an obvious wig. People gasped and stared until the teacher told her "I like your hat." Then everyone mellowed.

Right on, Lisa! I love Amy Sedaris, the womanis hilarious. She also will walk around with bruises painted on her face or in padding to make her look fat. Have you chosen a wig yet? If I had to choose a wig it would be a very dark bob with bangs, a la Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction.

As for having one's long hair fondled by strangers, that never happens to me. I sometimes get compliments on my hair but I must give off too much of a bitch vibe for anyone to try to handle it. Try this, Gardanna: whenever somebody sleazy encroaches on you or you feel they're about to just stare at them and think to yourself "Don't you fucking look at me". It's my mantra when confronted with sleaziness.

I feel uncomfortable and hot with things on my head so I've never tried a wig. My hair is an unusual strawberry-blond-orange-gold color that stylists won't touch at all as far as coloring goes. Nobody has every touched my hair but they do notice the color. Usually they are nice. Sometimes I get "where do you get that color?" I had one bitch say, when I was around 23, "nobody can be her age and still have hair that color." Boyfriends have said "so your hair really is blond" ;). Sometime I'd like to be really outrageous and dye it purple. I feel I don't get the respect I deserve in part because of my hair color, like dying it purple would help the situation.

Wigs are so cool. I only have a couple -- a really long curly auburn one I bought for a Halloween costume, and a cobalt blue bob with bangs. I want a black Cleopatra one because I kind of miss having black hair, but there is no way I'm going through the drama of getting black dye out of blonde hair ever again. I'd like a curly Marilyn Monroe one. I'd like a Mary Tyler Moore flip.

Wigs have saved me from a life of hair dye, and that's a good thing.

Oh, lordy, I used to have hair down to my butt, and only fairly recently cut it all off. In many ways it was like being pregnant; perfect strangers feel totally at ease touching your body. I usually wore it in a braid or a pony tail, and I got used to kids or friends just tugging on it or braiding it and stuff. But one time, I was sitting in Red Lobster, and I felt someone grab my braid from behind and give it one good tug. I turned to look and it was this really old lady, at least in her 70's, and she just giggled at me.

When I did cut it off, I know the stylist took it to sell. She wrapped it up and hustled it off to the back room. I didn't care till I found out you could donate your hair to have wigs made for kids with cancer, then I was kind of pissed off that I hadn't known about it beforehand.

A day or so after I had it cut, my little girl asked me when my hair would be long again. I told her it would be awhile, and asked her why she cared. She said, "Because you don't look like my mother anymore." I probably will grow it back, as it gets too wild without some weight to pull it straight!

Gwen, that is TBN! Can you believe that show? Don't look at their chairs without sunglasses. My Mom thinks that lady has a wig on a wig. I say it has it's own zip code.

Also, this is off post but have you been in Lame Bryant lately? They have club clothes now. It half way rocks (in a subdivision way.) It was really nice to see the younger "extra womanly" girls having a place to buy something that looks acceptable.

I have a new wig on order......I'll post a pic if I buy it. ;)

-- Anonymous, August 06, 2000

Oh, for real? I have to go scope out Lame Bryant soon, then. Yeah, show us your wig pic. I hope it looks like that TBN chick's, coz that shit's hot.

wigs....I don't know how many I have. I had short hair for awhile and scoured garage sales and thrift stores for wigs and yes, I would wear them...not daily, but holidays, special events, parties.

My favorite is a flaming red bob. My most detested is the shoulder length blonde....I was not ment to be blonde. Most special is the long deep black/brown real wig that Patrick spent real money on at a real wig shop and gave to me for my birthday.
