"King of Arcade" news and notes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : MAME Action Replay : One Thread

Ok, the time has begun, I know, for all the complaining to begin (ok, debate, had to be on the devils' advocate side) about the King of Arcade, aka Knockout tournament to begin. On my site http://cmp.tripod.com/koa.html includes everything you need about the upcoming tournament, including who is entered, rules for the tournament, and a quick entry form so you can enter online. Some big weights have entered so far, including Zylquin, JSW, Crash, Vaz, Lowe, Lamat, and Darre. Are you in it? If not, what are you waiting for, go NOW!

PS - Gameboy will have links on the MARP site to this information shortly, if you forget the address.

I am not a big weight, I'm just big boned!........wait, that didn't sound right...........

So I'm going up against Vaz? Why does the phrase "AH S**T!!!!!!!!" seem appropriate? I know, that was just a pre-tourny list, but still, I get the feeling that I'm going to be in it for only one week :)

JD, sorry for leaving you out. Updates on the site have been done on ALL pages, including the prize tally "IF" we decide to have it. Rules updated: (Something to debate has been put there) Entry list updated: Current entry list is at 17, including Lord AxE and Taz throwing their consoles into the fray. Enter at the site, neat little form for you to fill out. Also: Is anyone plugging this? Like at retrogames and/or TG? Just wondering.

Double elimination? hmmmm... don't like the sound of that. It'll just thin out the participants too quickly I think.

I'd prefer that people have a better chance, so maybe breaking the contestants up into groups of 4 playing more than one game, with the lowest overall in each group dropping out might make for a more balanced competition? A kind of mini-league knockout?

I can quite easily find more than one game in every genre that I'm useless at, so I quite expect to be out early, especially given some of the people it looks like I'll be pitted against :)

Crash.

Where was I left off?..........d'oh! Oops, I guess I should point out when I'm joking :)

Crash, good idea with the leagues. Imagine, head coach Taz, with bat boy J.D. Lowe :) However, and this is probably my youthful stupidity kicking in, but how would double elimination thin out the numbers (South Park reference :) ) of participants faster? I mean, come on, if I'm actually going up against Vaz, and WHEN I lose, I'll get another chance to survive.....and wind up losing to him again :)

Ok. So I thought double elimination meant ditching 2 people at once?

Guess that's not what it is then :)

If I'm not mistaken, this would be like double elimination:

Team A- \ - B- / \ Team B- \-B / Team C- / \ - D- / Team D-

Team A- \-A vs. D. - A wins / Team C-

Overall:

1st: B 2nd: A 3rd: D 4th: C

The first bracket represents the normal bracket in a tourny; we would all be assigned to A, B, etc. (not necessarily teams, but for this, I'm using teams :) ). When you lose once in the normal bracket, you get thrown to the loser bracket, where you can go against the other loser for a chance at 2nd place.

If there is a God in heaven, I will have described this correctly. If anyone wants to point this bewildered child in the right direction, be my guest :)

Sincerely,

J.D. Lowe

JD, you blew it... We'll, you had it mostly right, but at the end, A wins over D in loser bracket, plays top place for first. A would have to win twice to win championship...

Also, it wouldn't work exactly as stated due to knockout feature, as losers would be re-grouped back in with winners, just with their strike used already.
