Book review time

So what are you all reading at the moment. I'm in the process of reading the football business which is quite an interesting read. The chapter on Hillsbrough is very well done and has made me quite angry. So many mistakes in such a short time. Whilst it's easy with hindsight it still makes the blood boil.

Any one else read this book, there's quite an interesting chapter on the barcode army, well at least he's original.

Into Thin Air (John Krakauer) and The Death Zone (Matt Dickinson) both about the 1996 Everest tragedies. Recommended if anyone fancies having a crack at standing on the top of the world. I've decided to stay at home ;-)

Makes me cold just thinking about it!

I am of Season Ticket, which I am finding quite funny in a sad sort of way.

I have three Nick Hornby books to take away with me so I am looking forward to that.

I plan to take Birdsong away with me to Africa in Feb :o)

About 3/4 the way through Francis Wheen's biographt of Karl Marx. Pleasant journalistic style that gets Marx's ideas across without dwelling on the detail and deals with him as a complicated and often contradiction filled character. Highly recommended.

Also reading one of those History of NUFC books. Just getting into the 1950s glory years.

Into thin air, is a fantastic read, horrible subject matter but impossible to put down. I read another book of a similar vain of a Yokshire climber who broke his legs in South America whilst high up a mountain. It's amazing what the human body will put up with.

Still dipping in and out of Seamus Heaney's New Selected Poems; 'Death of a Naturalist' and 'Blackberry Picking' take me back to childhood holidays in the borders. Magic.

Mr Jacko bought me The Football Business for crimbo about three years ago (in hardback no less!). It is one of the most fascinating (and depressing) books I've ever read. The chapter on Man Ure which describes how the Edwards family went round knocking on the doors of old ladies to buy their shares on the cheap makes you cringe.

"Birdsong" is the best book I've read in ages. The description of the Battle of the Somme is outstanding. I followed this up with another Faulkes "The Girl at the Lion d'Or" - good for 75% of the way then cr*p at the end so don't bother!

If you want a really good edge-of-the-seat holiday read try Ken Follett's "Eye of the Needle" - gripping stuff!

Snap Jacko! I too bought The Football Business in hardback about three years ago. Fully agree with your comments. Well worth a read though. My copy`s out on loan to someone at the moment, but I am happy to send it on to anyone who fancies reading it.(:o)
