Is Kodak DC 4800 worth to wait for?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hello,

The new Kodak DC 4800 will be out in September in The Netherlands. I'am currently using a Kodak DC 215, my first digital camera. I also have a Canon Eos 300 35mm camera. I am really entousistic about digital photography but the DC215 is far too low in quality to make descent 5x7 photo's.

Can anyone tell me if the DC4800 will bring enough quality (pixels, maunal adjustments as focus, exposure and shutter) to give a prosumer the digital camera he needs. I'am used to 35mm quality, when I keep the photo's to the 5x7 format will the DC4800 be a good buy?

I am not able to find any review on the net.

Thanks, Sander

Sander, Steve's Digicam site at: http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html just posted a summary and a pointer to a review of the DC4800. The review is at: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/DC4800/D48A.HTM I have been wondering the same thing. I think I have settled on a Nikon Coolpix 990 because of the macro ability to focus at 0.8" The DC4800 sounds like a fine camera, apparently surpasses the 990 in low light conditions, and has some features not found on the 990. However, the 990 also has some features not on the DC4800, and you can buy one today. For my interests, macro photography is more important than ultra low light shooting. One point that I did not see in the DC4800 review was a discussion of flash redeye. The 990 has a problem here, and the Nikon external flashes are expensive. One owner of a 990 claimed in an online review that if you hold the camera vertically the redeye problem is not nearly as bad. I have not seen this discussed elsewhere. Does anyone else have experience with this?

The 4800 is a great camera. It is available in the US and will soon be available in Europe. I have read that the EU package will include two CF cards and a case (see Digital Photo FX magazine, UK). Anyway, red-eye is quite rare with the 4800.
