The happiest question I could think of

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Xeney : One Thread

If all your family and friends were killed in a big explosion, and you woke up paralyzed from the neck down, could you still motivate yourself to look forward to living?

Have a nice day!

But I can still move my head? Well then, I'll still be able to bob back and forth merrily to the happy song in my heart!

Or I could at least bite the power cord and unplug my life-support...

If that happened to me, I would work on my website with a pen in my mouth, poking at the keys one by one. I'd write my life story in my journal, including all the family secrets and the in-laws' closet skeletons, and then when I was done I guess I'd go ahead and kill myself. Right after I wrote a really eccentric will, I mean.

Put me out of misery, Please....

I guess I'd just try and get some kind of computer that'd let me type using my voice and a pointer in my mouth. I'd just sit on the xeny forum all day and refute liberals all day long.

Jesus, Cory. I've missed you.

And no.

No, Jim, read more carefully. It said paralyzed from the neck down...

Ha! You know I love you, man...

Having seen spinal cord injuries up close and personal it depends alot what part of the spine is injured. You said below the neck, but there are even differences--you could have some gross movement of your hands which actually can make a big difference in your quality of life as opposed to a Christopher Reeve situation where you cannot only not move a thing(sorry Rob, there wouldn't even be any head bobbing) but cannot breathe without the assistance of a ventilator.

Also, many other factors come into play such as finances, family support--a biggee, and you said all your family and friends were dead so that would suck big time.

My personal feelings knowing my personality and hating having to be cared for round the clock, below the neck paralysis, AND loss of family and friends would probably kill any motivation I had left.

Rob wrote: "Ha! You know I love you, man...".

I love you also Rob (in a manly, platonic sort of way), but my faith in you was shaken by your recent writings about the city of New Haven.

How could you possibly write anything about New Haven without mentioning that the Next President, G.W. Bush, was born there?!?

No. The problem would be finding someone to kill me, since I couldn't do it myself and nobody who cared about me would be around any longer.

Great, he was born here and then grew up in my hometown in West Texas. The man is dogging me...

I think I would have a hard time in these circumstances. Most everyone would have trouble making decisions if something like that had happened. But if I was the single person left surviving after something like that, I would take that to mean that I had a reason to be living -- that I had a mission or two to complete before I die. So yes, I think I would find the will to live.

And I totally made a not-so-seriously-meant question (at least I think that is how it was meant) and turned it into some real-life- face-facts kind of question. *Laughs*

What the hell is the matter with you?:)

-- Anonymous, August 04, 2000

Oh my god. What a depressing thought.

No.

-- Anonymous, August 04, 2000

Hell, no.

There would be very little reason to live. I could (at least) see my kid if she was alive, but she's not, so why contiue??

That's the happiest question you could come up with??? You poor thing.

I hate to admit it, but I think I could find a reason to keep on going. Just call me Mary Sunshine.
