Shearer for Rangers???!!!!!!

That warranted giddy punctuation. Keep your hands off, Rangers!

Hateley, who notched up 108 league goals in a lethal partnership with Ally McCoist at Ibrox, believes the solution is not too far away in former England striker Shearer.

"If Gers want a top-class striker then I think Shearer fits the bill," Hateley told the Rangers News.

"In Scotland he would score plenty of goals, and I think that at this point in his career he may find a move to Rangers very attractive.

"The chance to play regularly in the Champions League at his age would be a major factor.

"Domestically and at international level he will get on the scoresheet in most games, but if he wants a decent crack at Europe then why not?

"He could make the difference for Gers, so it may be worth bursting the bank."

Shearer is contracted to St James' Park until 2004, and it would seem unlikely he would quit the ambitious club for Glasgow.

But Advocaat, who added #3.25million to the transfer kitty this week following the sale of Jonatan Johansson, still has cash to spend.

He faces an anxious 24 hours to find a marksman for the Champions League with the European transfer deadline due to expire on Thursday.

Advocaat said: "From Tristan to Zidane I've heard them all. Yes, there is no doubt I want a striker - but we will just have to wait and see who that might be."

This is a bit of a weird one, isn't it? Shearer will retire when he leaves NUFC, I am sure of it.

When I read this, I got that chill that I used to get in 98-99 about him leaving and his absence this past few days is worrying. However, he has said he'll never kill a ball for another club so hopefully it's just speculation.

I meant "kick a ball".

Kill a ball is also quite appropriate the way he boots them ;))

why on earth would he leave. he has nothing to prove and if he stays he can become a legend. worth more than money

I agree and where's the challenge in playing for a side that wins every year. He isn't a real Tyneside legend, yet, is he?

And why sell your soul to the Devil for a worthless piece of silver

The chance to play regularly in the Champions League at his age would be a major factor.

Rangers may qualify regularly, but rarely play more than a few games before retiring to their bigoted bunkers

Hmmm. Loads of nice golf courses, easy pickings at work, and occasional trips to Europe. Just the sort of thing somebody in the twilight of his career would love. What are you waiting for ITK?
