Was all the storys we hear about Edgar true was he crazy on drugs? An abusive acholic like in his book "The Black Cat"?

Edgar allan poe did have a drinking problem as well as a gambling problem, but he only barely dabbled in drugs. according to one source, he died of rabies, and another, died in connection to his drinking. after his wife died, he went into a deep depression and tried drugs (mostly opiates) and went on heavy drinking binges.

Sorry but Edgar Allan Poe was into a lot of drugs, before and after his marriage to Virginia. Except that he slowed down when he was married but started again when she died. When he was a child, his nanny would soak bread in opium to keep him quiet for Allan. This started his problems. His main drug of choice was Opium though. Though I have heard alot of different other drugs he also used. So both answeres were off, try to get it right, if you are going to answer.

Both of Poe's parents were struggling actors who drank, though his father did so quite heavily. Poe did use opium, though a lot of stories we have about Poe are lies, that his publisher and "friend" told after Poe's death. Poe died of an alcohol induced coma, though he was a habitual user, he did not use crack, which wasn't developed until much later.

Oh yeah he smoked crack like a madman. I remember it like it was yesterday. If he didn't get a hit he would flip out. Start swearing, throw stuff at me, and then one time he told me he would do anything for a hit so I told him to find some dead people and have his way with them. People play to much and dont respect true art as if they can do it themselves psh ya'll wish. Now from what I have heard he was addicted to opium. He didn't use crack from what I've heard. I dont think crack existed then anyway. Thats kind of a late 19 to present 20 century kinda drug. The soakin of bread by his nanny I've heard was true in a literature class. I heard he did opium to treat his sickness and got addicted but when his wife died he went insane and just took way to much and OD on it. Little pieces of the TRUE answers are correct and some are wrong. I'm pretty sure theres other possibilites then what I'm puttin down but this is just what I've heard.

Ok, Come on People..GROW UP!! Poetry is real life. It's all got it own meaning and who cares if Edgar Allan Poe did drugs because he was a good writer and that is all that counts. I'd appreciate it if you'd not talk as though he achieved IN SPITE of his drug use... Sure he might have lived longer if he weren't an alcoholic and never tried opium, but he also might not have written down anything brilliant. Listen to some Bill Hicks. Don't do drugs if you don't want to, but keep an open mind.
