Nikon 22s AF illuminator

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I have a Coolpix 990 and just got the 22s external flash and bracket. Works well and takes fantastic pictures with great natural looking lighting and perfect colours. One small thing is that the AF illuminator function doesn't seem to work - not a big deal because the Nikon can be made to focus on nearly anything manually. But I would like to know if the AF illuminator is really not supposed to work with the CP990 - nothing in the documentation seems to help. Thanks

Roy,

Back when the Nikon Tech Support Forum was operational they had tons of questions just like yours on that same issuet. The answer was NO...the only thing the Coolpix can do is squelch the flash...nothing else. That's why I bought a cheaper SunPak flash...didn't see any reason to buy a Nikon flash will all the goodies if they don't work with the Coolpix!

It's too bad, because it seems like it wouldn't be too hard to use the Illuminator feature of the flash to help focusing in low light. Guess that feature is not worth putting on $1000 camera.

Sorry if I sound bitter to Nikon but I'm really p@##$d off about them killing the online support forum. You could learn a lot from the forum when it was up...guess that's why they killed it.

Hope this helps,

Small Block
