Security lapse shuts Barclays internet bank By Michael Paterson

BRITAIN'S biggest internet banking service had to be shut yesterday when customers found they could access details of other accounts. Barclays Bank suspended its online banking after people complained that they were given account numbers for other customers as well as their own. They were not able to make transactions involving the other accounts.

The bank blamed a new computer program installed on Saturday. After the service was closed at 3.30pm yesterday, technical experts put in the old program. The bank has 1.25 million online customers among its 13 million account holders.

Around 85,000 used the internet banking service between Saturday night and the suspension. A spokesman for the bank said no customers had lost any money but the breach was "unacceptable".
