County residents asked to cut power use July 31, 2000

San Diego area residents are being asked to cut their use of electricity today and tomorrow, days when the weather is expected to be pleasant -- with highs ranging from the 70s and 80s in Oceanside, Chula Vista and San Diego to a seasonable 100 degrees in El Cajon.

Temperatures are expected to soar in other parts of California, says the California Independent System Operator, the organization that manages electricity flow along the state's power grid.

The thermometer may reach the upper 90s in San Jose and go well above 100 in Sacramento and Fresno.

The resulting use of air conditioners and fans will likely strain power reserves, the organization says. Therefore, it is asking electricity users across the state to cut usage to ensure that there will be adequate supplies for all consumers.
