Is it possible with ATI card?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hi, I've posted before with troubles, questions and answers, but i've just read the latest post about an ATI128 card, and i was just wondering if it is possible to capture with any codec other than those of ATI's? Say the huffyuv or mjpeg? My card is a little old now, an AllInWonderPro8mb Agp2x, it still works well using ativcr2.dll codec for capturing from pal vhs and Heuris mpg1 encoder is the business for creaitng my mpegs. But i still have the problem of the 2gb limit on one 17gb hd and the use of another codec for capturing would be ideal, however ATI's video player software doesnt list any other codecs as available, does VirtualDub add anything to the equation?

Thanks for reading and hope you can help.

Andy

ps. Dont bother with the 'camcorder classic' version of MI:2, 'cos the 'ripper' put his logo in the top left hand corner of every frame AND you have the big screen's Chinese subtitles to contend with, laugh? Not a chance!

Hi Andy,

Yes I am using virtual dub to use other codecs with my ATI AIW128 16Mb card. I am just using its input source and this is it. As far as compression during capture is done by virtual dub using a different codecs, which in this case DivX or Mpeg4 v1 & v2 from MS. You can also use Huffyuv or Mjpeg if you want, since virtual dub will support them if you have them installed in your system. Now don't be confused as to what is being used to compress your video, since virtual dub is using the capture driver from ATI as an input source. Hence, ATI will not allow you to deviate from any other codecs beside theirs. However, it is just the preliminary format for input only, the real compression is done by the codecs you are choosing in virtual dub's compression option! So use what ever you want to use and happy capturing :)))

Not quite...

The ati capture driver supports several formats of raw capture. YUY2 is probably the best for most capturing. Just fire up vdub select source and format.

I would also reccomend that you grab the Pic video mjpeg codec, as well as the huffyyuv codec. They are great, and just use the one that best uses the space avaible to the capture.

I have been doing huffyuv captures using vdub for 1 hr. 20 GB broken down into 23 files, filter and scrub commercials. Then push the output through Tmpeg to make my SVCD disks. I have had incredable luck too with only 15 frames dropped per hour, I'm doing a whole lot better than I used to get.

I would use the built in compression, but due to excessive noise in my cable system, I really need to do noise reduction to make the encoding more efficient.

Happy encoding.
