It isn't on Metro radio or the NUFC official site. Looks like we'll have to wait till Screacher and co give us the lowdown a bit later. Posted at 20.00.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

argh! Need webcast. *twitch* Wherefore art Screach's reports? It must be near half time now. Right, back to scanning photos then. I have a blackmail shot of Sting.... Gav will enjoy it. muhahahaha >:-)

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

8:12 1-0 Cort near post header from a Griffin cross. Apologies for the lag but I've only got 1 line and updates mean dialing up etc after Screach has phoned.

Josh

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

PS Twas a 7:45 kick off.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Bless you, Josh!!! And bless Corts little head(if I were tall enough to actually see his heed!) and spindly legs. I think we've got ourselves something with C & C. Al might even have to fight for his place back! ;-)

No webcast on Burnley's site either. in fact, they don't even have a site. Some kind of fight between club and someone so it's offline.

Ciara , careful now just cos youre the other side of the atlantic does not mean i cant send someone to do a job on ya : - )) Im back in New York this weekend actually and Boston is only a hop away : - ) Im off to Long island for a day or so , and going to the Yankees game on Saturday so i understand which should be an experience .. tickets are dead cheap which makes a nice change . Did you get my note i left at the hotel .. the dozy staff didnt look capable i must admit . Good news about Cort i didnt think he was the finished article at DC , but hope springs eternal , and hes doing what hes paid for , lets hope he does the same at OLd trafford ... so one nil eh ? anymore updates on how were playing and im particularly interested in young Griffins game , high hopes for him the season .

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Well if you like to sit in the sun and drink beer for a few hours, you'll probably enjoy the Yankees. Or any other baseball game for that matter. From what I hear it's about the only reason to go. ;-)

And no, I never got your note. My message light did blink but when I called down they only gave me Mark's message from 2 days earlier. BTW, David and Dena did manage to find the reflecting pool, but said you didn't miss anything. It was all green and nasty looking. They recommended just buying a postcard.

Hmmm thought as much , ah well all it said was thanks for sorting the flights and all the local tourist info , and that we had a great time and were too jet lagged to make it to Fados which sounded like it was great and im gutted we missed out .. no worries though . We spent the sunday shopping in Greenwich and Chelsea and then went to central Park which was amazing .. we even found that roller disco , which was hilarious to watch . Monday i found a shop called Century 21 at the bottom of World trade centre , i was in there for 5 hours and spent 1200 quid on all sorts of clothes , it was like a toy shop for adults , i wanted to buy everything .. bought 3 suits n all sorts of designer gear , amazing prices about 1/4 of what it costs here , dont know how i got it all through customs : - ) Ill have to drop Mark anote , i saw him on the metro on the way back and agreed it just looked like a PR exercise the game .. actually annopyed me at the game how many so called Englishmen behaved , unbelievable , take them out of England and they behave even worse : - ( that was the only real dampener on the whole weekend .. but me body clock is still adjusting . I ve managed to get conjunctivitis very badly since i came back which i blame on the sleep patterns , or the booze one of the two . Just trying to relax and get meself back in shape before the next trip : -) Caroline is paying for it ... ahh what a saint she is ...now about that photo , where was it taken ?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Anyway sorry about the interlude , hows the second half coming along ?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Anyone know the latest?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

clubcall anyone ? ; - )) Nahh didnt think so .

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Oooo...Century 21...didn't know that was still around! 'tis a dangerous place indeed! You must have been right near us at the train then. Got held up trying to buy $#@#% tickets cause the metro folks are too thick to just collect cash(I wonder why they're paid to sit in those booths anyway?? They don't do anything..ever.). We heard a bunch of Geordies singing down the escalator and sure enough it was a big man in a kilt and other assorted drunks. ;-) He didn't go to Fado's either...very few of anyone I knew went. Finally got round to eating at some diner near dupont circle around 1am...after getting Bobby Convey into the party cause the doorman didn't recongnize him. doh!

Hope your eye gets better soon. Not a fun thing. I'll eventually get copies made of the photos you guys are in and send them along to you. I don't even remember taking one with Kieron Dyer! But we're both in it and it's on my camera, so must have happened. And if you don't remember the blackmail pic(which you willingly posed for!), you'll just have to wait til I find somewhere to upload it. ;-))

And yes...what about the game? Have we given away our now usual stupid goal yet? Or have the lads made as big an improvement since Weds as they had from the previous Saturday?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

How did the pics come out , did you see mine they look dead stupid cos i took loads of them meself , the one with AL was disaster but funny . How was the drive home , as bad as you expected ? Hope you get the pics uploaded soon , or not as the case may be : -)) I bet you took advantage of my drunken state , it wasnt the belly shot was it , please tell me it wasnt the belly shot : - (

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

This silence is making me nervous . Howay man toon , finish the buggers so i can gan to bed .

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

365 claim to have match reports of the pre-seasons - check that page out at about 10, I reckon.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Belly shot??? Good lord, d'ya think I want to break my camera?! When were you doing that anyway? I missed that. Wasn't when you were inhaling that other guy's lunch was it? Caroline is indeed a saint! ;-)) The photos are fantastic! Very few badly exposed shots, which is unusual for me. I've gotten the Thurs training session ones up at: www.shirtguy.com/toonarmyusa/NUSC_dcWrap.htm

Formatting is crap cause I was working quickly. There's alot of shots that won't go on that site, so I need to do a quick page somewhere else. I should start getting those up tonight. :-) Like yours too. It made a great little travelogue. I'm going to do something similar in a few weeks since I've not only got this trip, but a couple of shots from my time with Mexico and a BBQ with Revolution players and staff next week. Dry season? What dry season? :-)

Finally a win! And hopefully no new injuries..fingers crossed. :-)

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

From NUFC.COM. I really, really hope we don't have a Shearer worry on wor mitts.

Turf Moor Result:

Burnley 0 Newcastle 1

Carl Cort got his third goal in three games as United managed their first pre-season victory. Cort scored in the first of the friendly but Alan Shearer was nowhere to be seen.

More to follow shortly.

From Teamtwaddle: Clarets sunk by Cort strike ^top

Carl Cort scored the only goal of the game as Newcastle ran out 1-0 winners over Burnley at Turf Moor on Monday night. A disappointing game was only lit up by the South American skills of Argentine Daniel Cordone, who enjoyed a lively match. The only goal of the game came just before the half hour when the Magpies #7m striker got on the end of an Andy Griffin cross to plant his header past Paul Crichton in the Clarets net. Chances were few and far between but Cordone almost increased the Newcastle lead but he saw his shot well saved by Crichton. Burnley saw little in the way of goalmouth action with Andy Cooke having his side's best chance just after the hour. The striker was sent clear by Paul Cook and bore down on the Newcastle goal only for a last gasp tackle by Greek international Nikos Dabizas to halt his progress with a well timed tackle. As the game drew to a close Steven Glass saw his shot fly just wide but Stan Ternant will be pleased with a resolute performance from his side against the Premiership outfit.

Fair enough report from Teamtwaddle. It wasn't a particularly entertaining game. As you would expect, we were the better team but lacked penetration. MoM IMHO (and Pilgrim's) was wor little number seven. He controlled midfield. Close second was Warren Barton.

Given had little to do but did it comfortably. Howey looked solid and actually beat a man to the ball in a one-on-one - and he had two legs. Gomo looked good and had some nice touches. Dabs came on for Howey at 1/2 time but as he was at the far end most of the time (apart from a dribble into the opposing area) it was hard to see how good he was. But the last ditch tackle was brilliant. Hughes looked OK but wasn't stretched.

Speed was anonymous. Gallacher was OK but did nowt special. Griffinplayed wide right and had a good first half but eventually faded and was subbed half way thru the second half.

Up front, Cort took his goal well but missed another similar chance. He also lost his footing a couple of time when a stronger player (Shearer!) would have gone through and scored. Corblimey looked better in the first half and his left foot thunderbolt (that's the sort of word they use in match reports isn't it?) was well tipped round by the admirable Chrichton in the clarets' goal. Gavillan did more in warming up, running up and down the touchline than he did on the pitch - not that he had much chance. The rain was teaming and the ground partially flooded out wide. Corblimey looked like he was at home in a tropical rainstorm.

I concur with the comment about Shearer. He certainly wasn't on the bench. Ferguson may have been in the players' bar but he wasn't in ours (we did have to check, you understand).

Nice touch at the end when Rob Lee and Diego hoyed their sharts into the crowd. Numbers only - no names on the back.

This was a very encouraging performance considering the players who were missing - namely our entire strike force from last season. I was very impressed with Cordone in the first 20 minutes - he played on the left side of a front two with Cort. He then moved over to the right and didn't seem as effective. He is keen to take players on and is prepared to attempt outrageous flicks and the like!

Griffin did very well playing on the right side of midfield - he put in an excellent cross for Cort's goal - the big man simply got in front of his marker at the near post and headed powerfully into the net. Goma looked very solid at the back.

Burnley are a side who have only just been promoted and would therefore seem to be on the crest of a wave. Last week, however, they became the first ever professional team to lose to the Isle of Man over 90 minutes in the famous Manx International Football Tournament! They finished fifth out of six teams in that comp finishing only above Darlo! They had several new acquisitions in their squad - notably the revolting Kevin Ball who should be made to play with a bag over his head so he doesn't frighten the children. Like Toon, however, they were without their leading scorer - Andy Payton - and looked a bit pedestrian up front.

Toon had much the better of the game and should frankly have won by more. Cort missed an absolute sitter in the second half when he attempted to get to a cross from the right with his foot when a header seemed a much more obvious course of action. They played the ball around well though, and I was pleased with some of the running off the ball, especially in the first half.

All in all, an encouraging showing.

B*gger Screach - you beat me to it!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Ah, thanks youse two: great stuff!

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

PS. Feeling very much happier now you've said all that. Let's face it, we only played Celtic who were half decent last year and were losing right, left and centre. This year, those US sides sound half handy and Burnley are a good, solid side. Meanwhile the bairns/reserves are doing OK. Also, a loss, a draw, a win shows real progress and has a nice Toon symmetry about it> Thanks Screach and Jacko.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Well Jacko, Cheshire's just a bit closer than Staffordshire - and we know all the motorways round there! Did you manage to keep dry? We got soaked on the way from the car but dry inside the ground.

I forgot to mention - Rob Lee's shooting definitely hasn't improved over the close season. I reckon the last time he got a shot on target was 3 seasons ago,

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

With one glorious exception, Screach.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Screach

Thanks for the report - looks like I didn't miss too much. Cordone seems to be a good prospect and so does that youngster R. Lee.

All in all I'm starting to get optimistic.

So much more progress in the games so far.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Nah - that was a header. I knew some bugger would fall for it! Hehehe.

Or have I missed a shot (ie hit with the foot, Dougal)?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

The implication of what you were saying was that he couldn't hit a cow's arse with any part of his anatomy. However, if you want to be a Purist about it, it was a header from a magnificent Shearer cross. It wasn't a shot.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

I object! That's simply not true. I was very careful in the words I chose. You are indeed trying to put words into my mouth which I definitely did not say. Typical bliddy layer.

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Well I suppose I should add my bit, though I dictated most of Screaches report to him :-))

As Screach said, Rob Lee ran the show and never stopped running for the whole 90 despite one bone-crunching tackle on him midway through the second half. I'd honestly forgotton Speed was on the pitch I saw that little of him. Barton was sublime, when he's in posession these days he never looks like losing the ball. Very impressed with Cordone, who again very rarely gave the ball away - he always seemed to make space and find his man. Cort looks Silky - very smooth on the ball and makes some excellent runs into space (as does Cordone). Howie looked amazingly fit and Goma looks class. Sound performances by Hughes and Griffin. Given looked pretty solid but gave us all a scare with a throw out straight to one of the Burnley players, who was in acres of space. I knew his kicking was dodgy (actually today it was fine) but didn't expect him to get the arm wobbles! Of the subbed, no-one embarrassed themselves but we probably didn't have enough controlled posession to allow any of them to stand out. Shame 'cos I was looking forward to seeing Gavilan, based on the reports from the US tour, but he didn't get much of the ball.

We definitely controlled most of the game, particulatly first half when (sod's law) we had to watch most of the action from afar as it was all in the Burnley goal area.

We licked our lips in acticippp--------------------------------------- -----ation waiting for the second half, when we knew we'd see all the action up close (we moved to the front row behind the goal) - WRONG! It turned into a bit of a midfield battle and the ball was in our area as much as Burnleys - which wasn't much. We feared we'd made a mistake moving when we saw Rob Lee charging onto a shot from just outside the area, but we shouldn't have worried, the guy behind the corner flag had a lucky escape!

The Burnley crowd were pretty mute, I only heard them when Gallagher was on the ball (ex-Blackburn) and they booed, and they made a half hearted attempt at "What a waste of money" when Cort missed in the second half. The Geordies outsung them without really getting going - their weren't too many made the trip to be fair.

The Burnley keeper seemed to enjoy the banter with the crowd and the chants of "dodgy keeper" after a couple of strange clearances. Bobby Robson threw a bit of a wobbler with the team (got cross Ciara ;-))) just before half time for not "getting in to them", but largely seemed happy enough. Nice that Barton came straigh over to applaud the crowd, and a nice touch by Lee and Gavilan at the end.

We made the mistake of asking some coppers outside the ground where we could find an away-friendly pub. They declared that no pubs in Burnley were safe for visiting fans and we should go into the match and get a drink - Tossers! We did as we were bidden as we had the feeling we'd be arrested if we ignored their advice so paind #5-30 for a can of Boddies, a can of Carling and a bottle of coke! Mind it's the same in any ground and it was welcome after a frustrating drive in cr@p weather. Screacher treated me and Son of Pilgrim to a verbal tour of the water tanks on the changing room roof, which I hadn't realised was a particular passion of his, and took a photo of the state of the art catering facilities which I'm sure he'll post at a later date, together with the most embarrassing photo of me that he can find.

I wonder where Shearer was?

-- Anonymous, July 31, 2000

Didn't get wet at all Screacher. Had a meal in a nice pub up the bank then when it stopped raining about an hour before kick off, made a dash for the ground. We were sitting on the old Longside, which used to be a huge standing terrace and is now a posh double decker job. You lot in the cricket field end looked to be enjoying yoursleves! The response to Ball was wonderful - miserable mackem bar steward that he is. I never like using the word "hate" in connection with football but in his case I'll make an exception!

Staffordshire's bliddy wet at the minute - is it dry up your way? The cat was waiting for us when we got back and looked like she'd just got out of the bath!
