Spanish Jet Carrying Vacationers Back to Ireland Makes Emergency Landing

The Associated Press

TENERIFE, Canary Islands (AP) - A charter jet carrying some 170 vacationers to Ireland was forced to return to Spain and make an emergency landing after suffering an engine problem, a spokesman said Monday.

An engine on the Boeing 737 had "minor problems" early Sunday morning 20 minutes into the flight to Dublin, Ireland, the spokesman for the Futura air charter company said. The plane returned to Tenerife airport on the Canary Islands without further incident, and no one was reported injured.

The Futura spokesman, who declined to give his name, said he had no information on news reports that passengers had seen flames coming out of one of the engines.

The vacationers were flown to Dublin on another plane later Sunday.
