Toon/The Toon - Dougal

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Dougal,
You always refer to Newcastle as "Toon", e.g. "I'm going home to Toon"

This REALLY irritates me!

If it was "I'm going home to the Toon" that would be fine.
Even better would be "I'm gannin yem to the Toon" or "I'm gannin the Toon" or " I'm gannin 'yem"

Newcastle is not Toon, it is the Toon

Is this just me or does anyone else agree??

People saying "your" when they mean "you're" (or vice versa) really irritates me. But I suppose I'll get over it.

I really get the urge to hit people who deliberately leave Caps Lock on and shout at others.....bizarre isn't it but it's true....

Irritable bowel syndrome irritates me more, to be honest ;-)

I always remember it as doon tha' toon, before any 'toonisms' came round. Got to be honest the whole 'toon' thing annoys me, there are plenty of N.E. accents that don't call it the toon at all but it becomes townne. The old Northumbrian accent would rarely be so pinched in the 'n' at the end......stick that in ya resorch man. ;-)

Toon Army is beginning to grate on me too. We're the Mag's, we're the mags, We are we are the Mag's, we're the mags! thank you.

Actually, I think I agree with you in a way, TM. Some of us would get chinned for saying "Toon" in Newcastle cos people would think we were taking the p...s and/or being patronising. It's true: remember when we used to be the Mags?

Maybe I should have appended this to the Phobia thread as it REALLY gets my back up!!!

In the bbs world we have to excuse bad spelling/grammar. The your/you're and there/their/they're are all too common as people tend to type phonetically.

I try to type correctly but will always make the odd mistake. Don't get me started on apostrophes!

Anyho.... any chance of you using "the Toon" instead of "Toon" .... pretty please!??

all a bit bored this afternoon - nae need to slag each other off or what we say is there ? Howay man , get yersels doon Toon for a few bevvies man .

How man, Sting man!! neewonsslagginanyoneoffherelike!
that'll be The Toon then?
;-))

Geordie, I agree that this is a casual mode of communicating and I couldn't give a rat's arse about anything re grammar or punctuation or whether people aren't expert typists and leave capslocks on or are expert typists and start fannying around with fonts and 'Net squiggles. However, I do have a "you're" - "your" thing and thought I'd raise the irritation while you were raising one of your own. I can't promise that I'll say "Tha Toon" cos I'm a crap typist and I may miss it out. I will endeavourm to, though.

Typo in last sentence accidental but very serendipitous in the circs.

Sting

You startin' mate? That's wor lass ya starin' at, pal...got sommat ta say, like? How then, come on! Ootside now!

Dougal,
the your/you're etc. gets to me as well! The standard of English in the computer world is dreadful and causes the usual debates along the lines of "well if you understood it enough to realise it was incorrect, you understood it anyway.... so what's the problem".

Anyho... I can't explain my irrational hatred of Toon without a preceding the.
Hey.... a sentence ending in the! Bloomin' 'eck there's another one!

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2000

Geordie, isn't there some sort of quiz question about a perfectly valid sentence that contains 11 consecutive "hads"?

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2000

yeah.... something like:
Where X had had "had", Y had had "had had". "had had" had had made the better impression ....

or summmatlikethat ... though that's just 8 had's over 2 sentences!

Is that the time? bye....

Note to Football season: Please start soon, I'm losing it!

As far as am concerned yerall gettin ya knickas in a wad ower nowt. To me it's "gannin'ower the toon" always has been always will be. It's always gonna be Broon dog none of this "Bottle of Newcastle" shit. That backs me right up. once more its' always gonna be "come on ya black and white bastards kill 'em" only when Kenny wharton was playing though.

aaaah - Kenny Wharton. Wasn't so long ago he was one of our star players ! Do you reckon he'd get a game up front this season ? Ignoring the fact that he's pushing on a bit now I mean.

Down our way folk tend to talk about heading into the "CBD" (ie. Central Business District. I'd better not let that slip in front of Geordie else I'll get chinned. ;-))

And I was so much looking forward to having a drink with you all later in the year ....

I seem to remember once seeing / hearing a "Sid the Sexist" video, where they sing summat like; "Friday neet 'am gannin oot on THE Toon...", or was it, "...oot on the pull..."?

-- Anonymous, July 28, 2000

When exactly did we become 'The Toon Army' - don't remember it from before. It suddenly just seemed to be a given.

-- Anonymous, July 28, 2000
