digital camera software for new user

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I just purchased a Sony Digital Mavica. The only software installed on my computer is Microsoft Photo Editor from Windows 98. I am not able to print out 2 different images on a single page of expensive photo paper. I am looking to purchase some user friendly software to help me print out photos and fix up photos to send as emails. There is so much out there...I am overwhelmed. This will be used for home use. Thanks- Kristen

I would recommend Picture it! 2000 by Microsoft. It is very user friendly. It will allow you to download the pictures from your camera, batch edit them for brightness and contrast if required, individually adjust them, save them in different file formats (.bmp, .jpg, .tif, .gif, .pcx, .fpx, .tga, .png), save them in the proper size for emailing (either for sending as an attachment or for sending later). It will allow you to print your pictures 6 to a sheet, 4 to a sheet, 2 to a sheet or 1 to a sheet in varying increasing sizes from wallet size to 8 x 10, all pictures the same or all different. I've got Photoshop 4, Paint Shop Pro, MGI Photo Suite and Ulead iPhoto Express and Picture it! 2000 is the one I keep coming back to (as well as Photoshop when the picture really needs work). I'm sure you'll be very satisfied with Picture it!

If you have access to Microsoft Word (plain old Word), try inserting pictures (Insert menu, insert from a file). You can size them and put 2 5X7 pics on an 8-1/2X11 page, either portrait or landscape. That's what we use for all our proofs.

ArcSoft has a nice little program that you can download free (the lite version but that's all I've ever used).
