Play Cort and Ferguson with shearer in a Gallager role. Kinda batter the opposition into submission, might work for non-football playing teams. Kinda up and at 'em thing 4-3-1-2

I've thought about this on a similar vein.

If Cordone really is showing the kind of promise that could see him in the first team, he could play in a front three. Cort played right wing for Wimbledon so he would not be adverse to a bit of non-penalty area work. A front three of Shearer as the sole striker but with Cort and Cordone supporting closely would mean bi Al is not the lonely front man, a role at which he is inneffective.

Obvioulsy this route would only be suitable for certain teams and we don't want to get out numbered in midfield. Think of the attacking force we would represent though.

Had on a minute, is Euro 2000 just a blip on the horizon, few weeks ago the call was for mobile, nimble , skilful front runners, the day of the battering ram center forward was over, are we saying on here that we do not go that way.....forward.!! Question , if Bobby and his team had sat down and identified M`Penza as the player they required for the overall game plan in the coming season, when not availible did they go for Cort, a totally differnt style and on buying him will the team plan if there was ever one change.

You ask a difficult question Buff, and one I've certainly pondered.

We were advised BR wanted more raw speed in the front line, and also that DF was being hawked around for sale. Conclusion - we are moving away from the battering ram to a more modern style based on attacking at pace. Our moves for M'Penze supported that conclusion.

What happens? Can't sell DF: can't buy M'Penze, whatever the reason: we buy CC . Confusion!!

I can only assume that BR wanted a speedy forward to provide him with a different attacking option, and couldn't off-load DF anyway. M'Penze and/or his Club played silly buggers over fee/wages, and CC becomes available with several other Clubs also after him. So BR is faced with a critical decision.

IMO, the basis for his decision is as follows: * we MUST have another striker for the new season; CC is available and BR rates him highly.
* BR sees CC as BOTH a back-up (or alternative) to AS/DF,

AND

a longer-term replacement for AS, which is a definite need.
* if he can eventually off-load DF he can then still go for a pacy forward as and when a suitable one becomes available - possibly even M'Penze when he/his Club gets real.

Make any sense?

Yes it does, I had thought along these lines but formations, patterns. methods of play cannot be turned on and off like a tap, not only the front two who change, its the whole outfit on the field of play.

I'm quite sure Buff, that if BR had his druthers he would play with a target man and a fast ticky support striker. However, he's stuck with and injury-prone DF, on massive wages, who he can't sell, and a massive asset in AS who has maybe only 2 or 3 more good seasons in him.

He's got to plot a course from A to B somehow, even if it isn't ideal. It seems to me that buying CC is simply part of the overall plan.
