"I can't find it anymore ANYWHERE, and it was the best thing ever!"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Gwen's Trailer Trash Forum : One Thread

I get so frustrated, because just when I find something that it beyond wonderful, and get hooked on it, THEN it is discontinued or the recipe changes or they no longer make that particular style or it isn't as good as it used to be...et cetera.

My last holy grail was Flavigny violet pastilles, but I found them online. I have to buy them by the crate, but I can get them.

I have one pair of Perfect Pants made out of microfiber, in black, that knock 5-10 pounds off, visually, right where I need the most assistance. I have been unable to find anything remotely like them for over a year and one day I'm going to be running around in these pants, see that they are covered in little pills and all stretched out and realize that they are no longer flattering. I dread this day. So I'm looking for drapey pants of good quality in black, and there are a lot of also-rans, but nothing as great as THESE pants.

My new holy grail is Drost pastilles. Oh my god! The BEST chocolates. Well, top ten anyway. They are so good. I can make a tube of them last about a week, but only with iron self-discipline. I love them, especially the chocolate rum ones. I can't find the damn things anywhere unless they are part of a gift basket or something. (Example: http://www.gourmetbasket.com/cgi-bin/product.pl?iWSi=51&iCls=0&iSeq=0&iNoI=1&iDir=N&iICd=69 ) Even then, they are not the chocolate RUM ones.

Feel my pain. Then share yours. :)

as Gwen would say, "Gasp!" Milla, you KNOW I'm always going on about this topic. ;-) Good on you for starting this forum!
(clearing throat) Off the top of my head, here is a small sampling of Things I Love(d) That Naturally Ended Up Being Discontinued.

in no order:
Nitiraj "Vidharba" Incense. The ONLY incense I have ever been able to tolerate, let alone like-- and I love it. I bought it in London (UK), and then when I couldn't find any in the States, I wrote to the Nitiraj company and they told me it was discontinued. I made a friend in London go to the shop and buy every packet left, which (taking into account the gruesome US-UK exchange rate) cost me a bundle, but I have a small stock of it now, at least. I rarely allow myself to indulge in burning it, though, because I don't want it to run out.

Blueberry Pop-Tarts. Not the foul "Wild Berry!" ones they have now, with the purple-and-blue frosting (ugh, so tacky), but the ones that were available my entire life until a year or two ago. They had white frosting with multicolored sugar sprinkles, and yummy scrummy blueberry filling. The generic brands do NOT compare, and Wild Berry! does not taste the same. Color me annoyed.

Bras that actually fit me (though this one is no longer relevant, because I have switched to bralettes ;-) ). In the United States, apparently no one needs a 38AA bra, because that size simply does not exist. Clearly, girls with flat chests and big ribcages should not be permitted to wear supportive, flattering undergarments. In England, it is a different story. Marks & Sparks not only had my size-- they had lovely lightly padded brassieres that made me look and feel fab. I was shocked and delighted, and bought 6 to bring home. A few months later I sent my friend (same one who bought the incense) money to buy me a few more. Can anyone guess? Style was discontinued. No similar styles available. Isn't that nice!

I have taken to buying shoes I love in duplicate, because I've had multiple experiences trying to buy replacements/spares of fave styles and being disappointed.

Here's another thing: the ORIGINAL Star Wars trilogy. I am of the opinion that you shouldn't fuck with something that's not broken, and the original Star Wars films were perfect as they were. But if Lucas was hellbent on changing them, the least he could have done was keep the original versions available for purchase by the public. (Lucas discontinued selling them after 1995.) I managed to get a letterboxed copy of the original trilogy off eBay a few months back, but it cost me a HUGE chunk of cash, and it's video, so eventually, someday, it will wear out. I'm positive Lucas will not make the originals available on DVD, and that pisses me off.

My So-Called Life. Okay, it's a TV show, but it was, and is, the best one I've ever seen, and I still mourn its cancellation 5 years later. I was fortunate (and vigilant) enough to have procured (at substantial cost) a complete set of the programs from the ABC master tapes, but when BMG started selling the series in box sets, 6 eps at a time, I bought them too, wanting to stock up (because as I said, I'm hardwired to hoard spares), only to have BMG declare bankruptcy before it could release the last set of videos. So I have 2/3s of a complete set sitting on my shelf, which will never be completed. The first 3 eps have just been released on DVD, and I am hoping that I can at least get the complete series on DVD before the "Discontinued" Curse strikes again.

Remegel, and then Tempo, antacid chewables. These were soft chewy mint squares that worked better on upset stomachs than anything else I've ever tried, and they tasted good, and they didn't leave that dreadful chalky feeling in your mouth. First Remegel disappeared, and Tempo took its place, but then Tempo vanished as well. Now I'm stuck with Mylanta tablets which are so nasty to chew and swallow that it feels almost counterproductive to take them.

So many more examples, but so little time, and I've already written too much. So I'll leave it at that. Rant rant rant.

It's always so amazing when you realize everyone else finds the same things frustrating that you do, isn't it? Great topic!!

My greatest loss in this area was my fave comfort food: Campbell's chicken and oriental flavored ramen noodle soup. They made it for about five or six years, and then suddenly, it stopped being available ANYWHERE. I saved the ones I had left carefully, but they eventually ran out. Now I use Smack ramen (ick! hate the name!) but the oriental flavor is too strong, and the chicken flavor needs garlic, onion and parsley added to it to be palatable.

I have this problem with Lane Bryant all the time, particularly with pants. I'll buy one pair, find that I love love love them, and then go back only to discover that in my entire region, there's like one pair left in my size, which I have to special order through whichever store I'm at, and then make the hour-long trip back another time just to pick them up. I've started buying several of anything I like there, as someone else mentioned doing with shoes, because I hate 96% of their offerings, and apparently so does everyone else -- my favorites always go first, and if I don't get three while I'm there, I'll never be able to find them again.

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

I'm about to order three million Olga and Lunaire bras from Spiegel because I'm worried they'll be discontinued and the ones I bought are so good for me.

My fave stuff doesn't get discontinued as often as it's just hard to find. Like that red onion jelly I bought in Brenham... now I love it, but they don't sell it anywhere here. And I feel like it's one thing to buy something on a whim on vacation, but altogether different to special-order stuff that you could probably do without. So I can't decide if I should order more or just try to remember to pick some up next time I pass through that small town.

A year or two ago I bought a Cointreau-filled Lindt bar for a friend. Then I decided to eat it and get her another one. I'm glad I did coz it was all crusty and expired and messed up. So I called the grocery store and told them. The removed all the Lindt bars and then replaced every one but the Cointreau! I guess they figured out it contained alcohol so they didn't want to sell it. But it annoyed me. And I guess I could just go look for the candy somewhere else, but I'm too lazy.

I guess I've been lucky that most of the products to which I'm attached haven't been discontinued or are easily replaceable in my heart.

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

We should have a whole forum just on bras! I used to have real trouble finding those that fit but now I'll buy anything within 3 sizes each way (is that weird or what?) Guys at work must be like "what shape are her boobs today" and stuff in the bathroom. I just avoid those underwire things since everyone scared me with the "stabbed through the heart" story. I do buy shoes in multiple pairs, especially tennis shoes.

TV shows - They canceled Now and Again, and I was so upset. What a sweet and funny show.

Food - Publix is the worst for changing its inventory. I was so excited that I found a marinade I liked, then they dropped it. I was just about to have a fit, when I noticed it was made here in town, so there you go.

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

Well, I must be tangential for a moment, and uh, any male types reading this, you should stop now--Stabbed in the heart story? Yiks, underwires are the only kind I can wear 'cause I have a 36" rib cage, bitty boobs and my waist is only 2 inches away. These physical traits make elastic roll up on all other kinds. *Sign* (for any male types who continued to read anyway-I make up for it with fabulously long legs, ha, ha!) Anyway, back to the thread. Crabtree and Evelyn Savannah Gardens scent in lotion, incense, body splash, etc. I also went to all the C & E stores in San Diego and stocked up when I found out they were discontinuing that line.

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

I completely forgot about one of my more recent ones: Good Seasons Lite Italian dressing packets. After checking with my friends who are scattered across the US, I called the company and confirmed, yup, discontinued. *GRUMBLE* I've had to learn how to make the regular Italian stuff work, through trial and error, and have it going pretty well now. Oh, except that my favorite sweetened rice vinegar, Nagano (I think) is no longer sold in the convenient large-size bottle at any stores in my area (I've checked them all). Annoying. Back when I used to scarf Baked Lays I was bugged that you could never find BIG BAGs of the BQ chips, I hate paying three bucks for a little bag, it's lame.
There was one time, though, where a discontinued product was revived: Original Ovaltine! For a time, Ovaltine was sold only in chocolate or malt (Original had been a blend of the two). When I wrote to the company to express disappointment that they'd discontinued the Ovaltine I'd grown up on, to my surprise, they sent me a personal (not form!) letter with all sorts of sincere apologies, and handfuls of big $ coupons for Ovaltine. They even gave me a formula to try, to make my own "original" flavor. Then one day, a few years later, I got a letter in the mail telling me that Original Ovaltine was going to be available for a limited time, when to look for it, and a bunch more coupons were again enclosed. Eventually, like a year later, they scrapped the chocolate flavor Ovaltine and brought back Original. And they all lived happily ever after. ;-)

I must note here to our UK friends that American Ovaltine is NOTHING like English Ovaltine. Boy was that a letdown when I was living in Brum for a year-- Ovaltine here is a lovely chocolate flavoring for milk (with vitamins, unlike all the other choc milk powders), and it has just the slightest malt taste, which makes it so delicious.

I talk too much, don't I. :-\

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

That Ovaltine story is great. We should have a thread about companies that "rock" in the customer service department. It seems like there's not many, but a couple of them do it right. I sent a note to 3M telling them how great their new cleaning cloths are, and they sent me a funky email back saying that "writing to them says a lot about me as a person." Excuse me?

This is totally off topic, but have you read that book (supposedly by Jerry Seinfeld under an alias) with all of those fake customer service letters in it and the companies' responses(I can't remember the name.) It was hilarious!

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

I haven't heard anything about Seinfeld writing a book like that, but there is "The Lazlo Letters" and "Citizen Lazlo" by the guy who used to play Father Guido Sarducci on SNL. (I can't remember his real name, but the pseudonym he uses in the letters is "Lazlo Toth".) If you can find a copy of either book, take a look. They're hilarious.

Does anybody else miss tan M & M's? Blue just doesn't cut it.

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

Philip, that's the book! Thanks...I couldn't remember.

You're not reading the bra posts, are you? *snicker*

-- Anonymous, July 25, 2000

Gawd, I miss Sobranie cigarettes. They were so cool came in 2 different varieties. One was black papers with gold covered filters and the other had the same gold filters but the papers around the tobacco were the most beautful bright pastel colors. Of course they smoked just like normal cigs but they were a great way to get attention, expecially at parties. The last time I had any was around '95 or so. Then I heard that the company that made them stopped exporting them to the U.S. because they feared a lawsuit or something. My mom was recently in both Europe and Australia and I had her look for them but she couldn't find them anywhere. Have any of you ever run across these anywhere recently? Does anyone know of any other brands of colored cigarettes?

The Lazlo Letters are hilarious. The books supposedly ghost written by Seinfeld are Letters from a Nut and More Letters from a Nut. I dunno if they're any good, but we've got 'em at my store and they sold like crazy for awhile.

Regarding bras, I can't stand to wear anything but underwires, so naturally I'm dying to hear the "stabbed in the heart" story. Sounds like a choice urban legend to me. I've also seen a book before about the alleged link between breast cancer and the type of bra one wears. It was called Dressed to Kill. Supposedly underwires press in one your lymph nodes and the authors postulated that the pressure somehow led to the development of cancer. Um-hmm.

When I was little I used to love Thomas' cheese flavored English Muffins. They were bright orange, and man did that taste great! Then one day when I was about 5 or 6 the A&P stopped selling them. I have never seen them since. I miss my bright orange cheese flavored muffins!

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2000

Reading about missing My So Called Life made me miss it even more! Oh, Angela, we hardly knew ye! The Fox Family Network shows it on Saturday afternoons now, since MTV stopped showing it.

I loved Chaos, a perfume by Donna Karan - it was only around for like a year.

I think they don't make Low Fat Pop Tarts anymore and I really liked those, there was pratically no difference in taste at all.

Every time I buy a pair of running shoes that I love, they are discontinued. I should buy multiple pairs but they're like $100 and I hate to spend $100 so a pair of shoes can sit in my closet.

This is stupid and work related - but bear with me - IBM makes these docks for their laptops, which I purchase for my firm. They also sell monitor stands which fit over the docks. Or they used to. They still sell the docks, but now they sell a "sleek" monitor stand which doesn't fit over the dock. I had to hunt down the discontinued monitor stands like they were illegal or something. I asked the customer service reps at IBM why they'd still sell the docks but not the stands that fit over them and they recommended I stand the monitor next to the dock. Oh. Thanks.

Re: Sobrainie cigarettes / colored cigarettes

If you care more about the style than about the flavor (because I can't speak to how tasty a cigarette they are, I don't smoke 'real' cigarettes), Jezebel makes violet (etc.) scented cigarettes that come in pastel papers with gold filters. The violet ones are, naturally, violet. And Sapourna cloves "extra" are black with a gold band. I don't like them as much as the lighter versions (pin-striped white with a red and gold logo), but they get a lot of comments and goths try to bum them off me all the time. They're definitely striking. Djarum cloves have chocolate-brown wrappers.

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2000

Lazlo Toth / Father Guido Sarducci are, I think, characters created & portrayed by Don Serillo.

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2000

Bumming Goths...that's rich!

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2000

Hey, baby, you ever want to pick up a boy (or girl!) with dyed black hair, pierced nipples and pleather knickers, those black cigarettes work a treat. The clove aroma is like goth catnip. You can't beat them off with a crop (besides, they like it far too much). :)

Conversely, no one has ever expressed any interest whatsoever in the purple 'violet-scented' cigarettes, and I found them disgusting anyway.

Philip-- Yes, yes, yes!! I mourn the loss of tan m&m's!!! They were the best ones! I don't see why they had to ditch one color to make room for blue-- what, do they have only 6 colored-candy-shell-making machines or something? I find that hard to believe.

Joanne, MSCL on FFC is edited for time, AND-- if you can believe this shit-- it's edited for content!
[Kelly stomps outside to shout her outrage]
Bastards. Show it complete, or don't show it at all. *grumble*

-- Anonymous, July 26, 2000

Hey! I like blue! :) But I agree, I think that they should have kept the tan ones and gotten rid of the dark brown ones, since the color is not the least bit different from the candy inside. It's like they're walking around streaking with just an "m" on.

Anyway, M&Ms can't have only 6 candy-shell-making machines, because M&M's come in all sorts of colors besides the bag 'o' six we get. In fact, a recent promotion involved a bag of "wacky mixed-up-color" M&M's, like white ones, etc. At Easter they have pink, lavender, light blue, teal and cream ones, at Xmas they have dark green ones and at Hallowe'en--though I haven't seen any myself--they have black ones. It's apparently just peversity on their part not to put the full spectrum in the bag. In fact, the peanut butter and almond variations have no orange M&Ms whereas M&M Tinies add hot pink minis. Also also, if you want to be REALLY authentic, tan was not in the original line- up. They had purple ones--not tan--until the fifties. And the "m" markings were black, not white. Peanut M&Ms used to come only in dark brown until the sixties.

Don't think I'm some crazy M&M-obsessed nerd, I went to the official site to find out just how many colors there actually were, which is where I found that other stuff out. BTW, they make 21 colors, total, and you can order custom blends here: http://www.m-ms.com/colorworks/ Unless they are now calling the tan ones 'gold', tan is no longer an option. Tan, we hardly knew ye. (You know, I think that bags of white M&Ms (mixed with whatever other 3 color(s) you'd like) would be great wedding goodies for guests.)

On the other hand, if they did put every color they can make in every bag, people would probably bitch the same way I bitch about Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Trix, etc.--the extra colors in the newer versions of these cereals confuse and dismay me and I wish they weren't there.

Didja hear about this guy who won the wacky M&M contest? (I don't know if there was only one winner or what, but...); he's an inmate! Heard in on the radio news show a few days ago; the guy asked a guard to get him some M&M's and he won the big (what was it, $1 million?) prize, but has to wait so-and-so many years to get the money. Ha. Wonder how the Mars people dig them apples? (since these contests always come with the caveat that you must surrender your likeness, etc to the sponsor forever or something). It sounds so unlikely that I really question the story's validity, but hey! The radio news people know their stuff, right?

I miss Zemo (lone e, long o). When I was a little girl I spent summers with my grandmother in Texas and she always had Zemo. It was this pink cream that smelled like peppermint and it cured EVERYTHING...sunburn, bug bites, cuts, etc. I had this stuff all over my body during the summer, and it didn't sting, and it smelled good, and it took the sting/itch/ouch away. I would get a boo-boo and my grandmother would tell me to "run and get the Zemo!" and it was like this magical, comforting elixer. There was also a liquid Zemo but it wasn't any good cuz it wasn't creamy and it would get everywhere, not easy to apply.

2. Impulse Body Spray in musk.

3. Chanel Cosmos nail enamel. It was this fab midnight blue color.

Coca-Cola syrup. It was to cure nausea, and DAMN it worked. Sometimes I'd add it to a can of Coke, if I felt really sick, and would end up with caffeine shakes on a grand scale. And Bisedol mints. They were also to cure upset stomach. Gram used to stock both of these, and now I can't find 'em anywhere!

-- Anonymous, July 27, 2000

Oh, did you have to mention green M&Ms? Someone told me the legend once, and I remember standing there like a dunce, wondering aloud "Why GREEN M&Ms? Don't the brown or red ones work?" I am so out of touch.

The minute I buy a pair of shoes, comfortable, wonderful shoes, they disappear forever. I do miss Tempo and tan M&Ms. Mainly I miss the cereals of my childhood: Quisp, Quake, and the word "sugar" like Super Sugar Crisp. I mean, who are we kidding, here! It's not like they took the sugar out....."honey" ain't fooling no one!! TV: I miss "it's like you know," "Snoops," and all the other good quirky shows that disappear into the mists of time.

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2000

You know I never noticed that they replaced the tan M&Ms with blue ones until last week. I was playing Jr. Trivial Pursuit with my son and that was one of the questions.

-- Anonymous, August 03, 2000

You can find cola syrup at pretty much any drugstore, look on the aisle where they sell peroxide & alcohol & glycerin & peppermint oil etc.

I buy Quisp at Super Kmart.

I'm pissed that Pampers discontinued Rash Care wipes. The regular unscented wipes from all companies hurt my baby's tush, only Rash Care was tolerable. Now I have to make my own solution and use paper towels, I just don't want to go through all that :( Guess I'll have to potty train him now...

-- Anonymous, September 11, 2000

"Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific Shampoo" discontinued due to the use of flormaldahyde - rumor has it it IS available in the Phillipines.

I have an idea - we should create some sort of "shopping list" (no narratives) and we can search stuff out for each other... sometimes "discontinued" items ARE available in different segments of the country...especially food items. Just a though

I can't find Impulse ID body spray anywhere and i'm going crazy. My boyfriend loves me to wear it. If you've seen it anywhere please let me know or if you know of an (almost) identical perfume/body spray I want to hear about it. UK or US responses both welcome.

Nat Sherman cigarettes come in colors with gold tips. The Black and Golds are black with gold tips and Fantasia Lights are colored with gold tips. They are also the best damn cigarettes in the world, and while they are more expensive than regular cigarettes, they are less expensive than a good cigar. I treat myself to a pack whenever I visit the tobacco store, although I smoke Nat Classics rather than the flashy ones. I get enough attention when I smoke, I'd prefer if the whole world just didn't see that I have this lousy habit that I can't seem to break.

Anyway, anyone who wants to smoke "cool" cigarettes, there's your best option. And now I'm craving Nat Shermans. And My So Called Life. Damn those blackhearted tv executives for taking away something so beautiful. And they left fucking Family Matters on for how many years? We lost Angela but we kept Urkel?

Robyn, I just checked www.natsherman.com and their catalog will be available online 12/27.

Where can you find a website to look for discontinued grocery items? Looking for Kraft cheese topping. Not Parmesan but the orange colored cheese that you would sprinkle on popcorn.

-- Anonymous, January 18, 2001

I had been looking for that stuff for a while too, but then I found Molly McButter cheese sprinkles, which are very similar and I use them all the time.

Carnation Breakfast Bars...particularly, the chocolate peanut butter ones. I can't find them in any stores, only those crappy Nutri-Grain and Kudos bars. The closest substitute I've found have been the chocolate peanut butter Powerbar Essentials bars, but those are kind of chalky and tough.

Oh, oh, oh... the REAL Trix cereal... not this new-fangled spongy fruit-shaped shit. I want the old fruit turds!

And Pogen's Gingersnaps. Those were the BEST, and I haven't been able to find them for a million years. I think they're bye-bye. I was excited, though, to find that IKEA (of all places) sells gingersnaps that taste almost the same. They're a little too light in texture, but the taste is close.

This series of HarperCollins College Outline books... had basic outlines for all sorts of subjects. I got Intro to Philosophy and a couple English Lit ones, but now, it looks like they're out of print.

Jaqueline Briskin books. It's pretty much Hollywood Smut, but she's actually an intelligent and talented writer. She hasn't had a new book out in God-knows-how-many years, and all her old stuff is out of print, so I can't replace my tatty paperbacks with new ones.

I'm currently Holy Grail-ing for some of my old Barbies, but am having zip zero luck with a US version of a Japanese doll called Licca. I need a red-headed one. Ha. Good luck.

-- Anonymous, January 25, 2001

bb, the kraft cheese topping is nothing more than the powder used in mac and cheese. If you're really hard up for it you could buy a box of mac and cheese and use the powder on your popcorn.

I'm just bitter cuz I did that for years before they marketed it as a separate item. Then I'd use the pasta with regular tomato sauce.

-- Anonymous, January 26, 2001

Try looking for the Carnation Breakfast bars by the Carnation instant breakfast. It's a mix you add to milk and it's located by the hot chocalate mixes and sometimes by the chocalate milk mixes.

The only bra horror story I've heard was when a woman's underwire kept making the metal detector beep at the airport and it took them forever to figure it out.

Long before Starbucks' bottled Frappucino, there was something way cool called Chococcino that was almost the same thing: cold milk, chocolate, coffee and lots of sugar. It was delicious, tastier than the Starbucks stuff, and best of all its bottle was brown and strongly resembled a beer bottle - I would drink it at work and people were always doing double takes, thinking I was drinking beer openly in the office. Anyway, it was delicious and then I couldn't find them anywhere anymore. :-(
