Portable, non-PC Storage Device?????

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Does anyone know of a mass storage device that allows direct transfer of images from a digital camera? I just returned from a trip to China and although I had two 128MB cards for my Nikon 990, I wound up taking over 500 images by downloading onto my notebook PC. Yes, I know I could have lowered the image quality, but that's not an option for me, I want best quality all the time. If I had not packed my PC at the last moment I would have been an unhappy camper. Yes, I know I can edit the images on the camera to clear up space, and yes, I could have restrained myself and taken fewer images, but then I would have missed some great opportunities. So, is there some paperback book sized gizmo out there that allows direct transfer via a cable to a digital camera? Thanks for your answer.

I have resarched that same problem. Except, I don't even have a lap top. In my search I found an interesting device that you might check into. The Iomega clik! drive. It received rave reviews from the articles author. It is a device that stores 40mgb of images onto floppy sized discs. While traveling you can do this over and over. The down size is that you have to work with multiple 32mgb picture cards. You might check it out.

There is a device called a "Digital Wallet" which is essentially a 6 GByte hardrive in a portable package with it's own operating system and USB port.

It allows you to store about 650 full TIFF files from a 3 Meg. camera.

It has a few qlitches at the moment but looks very promising.

Have fun---An age old problem..
