Water Main Break Creates Huge Hole

A gaping hole is left in a Rancho Bernardo roadway after a water main break. The 16-inch pipeline ruptured underneath Bernardo Center Drive, about a block and a half east of Interstate 15, yesterday. A geyser from the break buckled the asphalt and opened a 25-by-25-foot crater, 15 feet deep. It took about an hour and a half for work crews to turn off the flow. Water service was restored to a nearby shopping center and a cluster of offices about three hours later. It's not known yet how long it will take for repair of the roadway.
