July 25, 2000 Phone Service Generates Numerous Complaints

Local phone companies are starting to feel pressure from their customers. The "Chicago Tribune" reports Illinois phone regulators and advocacy groups, such as the Citizens Utilities Board, say they are swamped with complaints of poor local service. Local phone companies blame each other for the mess, while customers wonder why competition isn't helping service. The Federal Communications Commission says it will help whip phone companies into shape by making public the names of companies with the most complaints.
